As a Yorkie rescue volunteer - I have dealt with this issue in the past.. Head and shoulders works great used on a small toothbrush to get "leather ear" healed. Leather ear is when it dries out turns dark and no hair grows on the ear.. this is very common in yorkies and is solvable with the Head & Shoulders method. AS for the dog's entire body I would suggest using an oatmeal type shampoo with mosturizers to alliviate the dry skin - this is merely a sympton though you need to find the cause and fix that for permenant solution. This could be diet related - often if a dog is lacking nutrients it will manifest through dry brittle nails or dry skin.

Yes it's O.K. to use it. However it's not going to do much for the dry skin except make it worse. You need to get a shampoo made for dogs that has aloe and oatmeal in it. Wal-Mart sells one that is as good as the one at the vet and much cheaper.

Treating dry skin needs to be done from the inside out.

I'm going to cut/paste an answer I gave a while back so I don't have to type it again.

There are many products out there that you add to the food. Treating dry skin needs to be done from the inside out. There are derm caps and liquid, as well as many others. You can also use vegetable oil. Start out with a tablespoon and increase as time goes by. Give what your dog can tolerate without causing loose stool. No more than 3 tablespoons. There are also some good shampoos for immediate, temporary relief. Oatmeal and aloe is a good one. Stop by your vets and see what they have then go to Wal-Mart and try to find the same ingredients in something cheaper. Have worked for a vet for over 20 years I can honestly tell you that you can find similar products that don't have a 100%+ markup.

No - absolutely not! Get a dog shampoo which is formulated for dogs, and use a conditioner. Also since she has dry skin, the less baths the better and give her just a bit of oil in her food - that will help with the dry skin.

You shouldn't use any shampoo that contains soap on a dog, it will irritate their skin. The best thing to use on a dog with dry skin is an oatmeal shampoo especially for dogs. You should be able to purchase this from your pet shop. My dog had something the same and this stuff worked wonders, and it smells nice too!

Bathing her too much is what dries out the skin for doggies. I don't know about head and shoulders, but I think I would be better if you use stuff just for dogs. They have conditioning stuff for them at the petstore, its supposed to keep them alittle oily, like when we use conditioner on our hair. I only bath my dogs like 4 times a year and that is all you need to do, unless they get into something or getting muddy.

No the Ph and ingredience in human shampoo's differ from dog shampoo's. You may cause skin problems, irritation, and coat problems using human shampoo's. Dog oatmeal shampoo is good for dry skin. If its due to cost of dog shampoo, you can get a generic "store brand" for about $5.00

No way a dog needs a dog shampoo. Ask your vet what kind is right for her. How would you like to be bathed in dog shampoo?

i believe that just about anything we use ourselves as humans is ok to use on our dogs. i use to raise labs and the male i used for breeding is still with me. sometimes he doesnt feel well and i will give him a tylenol or advil. use to doctor up stray cats as well and survived some server cases. liquid advil for kids i found works great...so why not use head and shoulders...you may have a discovery there for dry itchy skin!
