I just got back from my second tour in Iraq and I have to say more important than prays will be the constant communication you share with your loved one. Write, email or whatever , but know that to a solider , marine, sailor or airmen the communications with back home are worth more than gold while you are there. Prays are nice but come no where near the value of a letter from home.

I dont believe in God, so I dont pray. I dont agree with this war either.
That being said, I do have a great deal of respect and thanks for the actual men and women serving ANYWHERE in the world. They did not choose to go to war against Iraq. They chose to serve their nation, and that is great!
I wish the best for your friend and hope he and the rest of the men and women in Iraq come home soon and in one piece.

Prayers mmmm, might make sense to some I suppose.
Being ex-forces myself I can tell you the best thing from home is a letter or if possible a phone call. It does you good to receive letters from home, much better than prayers believe me :-)

Heavenly Father, I thank you that you watch over all of us. You care even for the sparrows, so, how much more for those who are made in Your image?
Father in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ, we come to you now and we lift up to You this soldier:
We ask that You would place a hedge around him father, as well as all the others. Protect them Father. Surround them with protective warrior angels. I thank you that even the arch-angel Michael will be sent to protect if necessary. According to Your word, we plead the blood of Jesus Christ upon this soldier, and the others for their protection and Your blessing to be upon them.
More than anything Father we pray for their salvation. May each of them come to know You as their own Lord.
We thank you for watching over them, going with them, surrounding them and giving them wisdom. May their every step be guided by You.
Comfort the parents and loved ones of these soldiers. Let them know that You hold them under the shadow of Your wing.
Peace and comfort.
Thank you Father, in Christ's holy name we pray.
