Before you invest in a new sound card, try just reinstalling the drivers for it. Open Device Manager (Right click on My Computer and go to Properties, then click Hardware tab then click Device Manager button), then check if there are any problems with your sound card in there. Also, check Dell's website to see if there is an updated driver for it.

Are you sure it's a hardware problem. Usually downloading something on to the computer doesn't fry a sound card. Make sure the soundcard is a seperate card and not an integral part of the motherboard. If it is part of the mobo, then you can buy a new soundcard, install it, then go into the computer's BIOS and disable the onboard soundcard.

hey hope before u replace ur old ones with new one or even buy a new sound card u do that ok:
first if u have the cd of the sound card u insert into ur cdrom
second let the cd of ur old sound card start to download the whole of its features and when say remove or repair u click repair
third when finish repairing ur sound card u let ur cd stays in the cd rom and restart ur computer
then u check if ur problem is over or not if the sound card worked out so go go it is over ur problem and u'll have no need to buy a new sound card,if it didn't work so it is done u should buy a new sound card and i recomend u that sound card:
creative sound blast cards ;it is the best really and always have fun stuff on
so hope that helps u there:).

I am sure it comes down to drivers. If you reinstall the drivers then it should work. I am sure the sound card broke. If you do want to get a new card it is not hard to replace. Just open the computer and pull it out and put in the new one. It just slides in.

Soundcards are not expensive; but it would be cheaper to reinstall the drivers for the old one ;-)
I don't hink something downloaded can destroy the soundcard; it surely messed up its driver, so removing it and reinstalling again should solve the problem.
If you still want to install a new soundcard, take out the old soundcard, insert the new one in its appropriate slot and start your computer. Now remove the old drivers and install the new ones. For all those operations, "Windows" has "wizards", so it isn't hard at all.

A new card can be expensive...where I live you can buy 1 for 200-300$, but you can also find cheaper ones at about 50-70$ but they aren't that good and sound quality kinda suckz :(

There is no possibility of sound card being damaged.
All that you have to do is, reinstall the drivers of your sound card. Or Reinstall the OS if you can do it. That will take care of all problems.
Before doing a reinstall backup all your important files, favourites etc on a cd/dvd.

well you said that your brother DOWNLOADED something....so I think that its something to do with its Drivers.....if you can, ask someone who's comfortable with PC's to reinstall your Sound Card for you......also suggest changing the PCI slot.....that should work.....
If not then a new sound card is pretty cheap....and only 15 mins are required to install it!
