My dog has been neutered this morning and I wonder how long it will take until all his hormonal changes have occured. I am not expecting any wonders, but would like to know how long it takes until he stops feeling the urge to stray and mount other dogs.

Some dogs just like to wander, do you have a fenced garden? - particularly if they have got in the habit. But he will stop chasing the females on heat.
The mounting thing? Some dogs just do this from time to time anyway, whether it's another dog (male or female not-on-heat) or a person's leg. I think you have to just wait and see. Our cat, which was neutered at a later age, still sprays all over the place to mark his territory, and fights sometimes, but not as much as the cats which weren't neutered at all.

I've had 2 dogs neutered & there was no change in them at all. I think it just depends on how old the dog is when you have it done. If straying and mounting are something he's used to doing he may not stop just because he's been neutered. Good luck.

well done on doing the sensible thing with neutering your dog, not only will it stop any accidentel puppies it will give your dog a healthier and longer life with fewer health risks!
your vet should have told you everything you needed to know but obviously he was having a bad day!
Its about 6 to 8 weeks for the hormone levels to stabilise in most dogs, it does depend on the dog tho.
the mounting may well be a habit now, not out of desire for sex but just like any other habit dogs get.
if after 6 weeks your dog is still mounting other dogs you may well have to train him not to do it anymore.
i had my dog neutered at 6 months and very occasionly he mounts another dog he wants to be dominant over. (male or female)
good luck with this, i know its very embarresing having to drag your humping dog off another dog or spend hours in the park looking for him while he is having a whale of a time with the girl dog behind the bushes!

They never do stop mounting other dogs, but he won't want to stray every time a female is in heat. Neutering doesn't make them unable to mount, just lessens the urge. Should happen almost immediately.

The urge to stray isn't always connected to weather or not he is neutered, some dogs are just adventuresome! Also mounting other dogs isn't always connected to them having sex, sometimes it is a dominate action!
So if you had him neutered for those reasons alone, you might be disappointed.

the second his teaties were cut and i mean the second it happenes . there may be some residual traits of the male like the enjoyment of humping that may never go away if not neutered in time.pretty much it all depends on how old the dog was when neutered, and the traits he was showing then.
