Gatling, and the gatling gun .....to end all wars!
The Gatling gun was designed in 1861 during the U.S. Civil War. However, in 1862, the U.S. government did not purchase any, for the Gatling guns lacked triggers and were far too heavy to be set up quickly in combat. Even when Dr. Gatling improved the design, it still lacked the desired trigger and weighed an unwieldy 90 lb. However, Union General Benjamin Butler bought twelve and used them successfully on the Petersburg front. During its debut in combat both Union and Confederate soldiers were awestruck by its power and effect. They were only put into limited service late in the war by the Northern army.
The first automatic machine gun was the recoil-operated Maxim gun, which used linked (belt) ammunition, as well as a single barrel and automatic loading. This concept of using bullet energy would also drive the development all nearly all other semi and fully-automatic firearms of 20th century.

Any parent or grandparent would have to acknowledge that this type of senseless violence needs to be curtailed in whatever way possible. My suggestion to the White House and to Congress would be to call upon the National Rifle Association leaders to be part of the SOLUTION instead of part of the problem---they could be called to the White House to help work out an assault weapons ban or whatever other solutions or preventions they might propose as Consultants. Maybe then the strange divide that these militants have peddled over the past years can be bridged for the good of our citizens, and especially our children.

The shooter didn't use any automatic weapons (which are basically already banned). Your question illustrates why a knee-jerk desire to ban something in the wake of a tragedy is unlikely to actually save any lives.

The Gatling Gun. It was actually used during the Civil War, so its been around since at least 1865. Leonardo Da Vinci designed one, but I don't think it was ever actually made. His design had multiple barrels firing, but the Gatling gun is the machine that you see being hand-cranked every so often in a movie. It had a single barrel and a "belt" of ammunition that was fed into it.

In 1718 a guy named James Puckle demonstrated a flintlock single barrel gun which was loaded with a nine shot cylinder magazine. It worked well in all temps. and came with a cylinder with round balls to be used against Christians and a cylinder with square dice shot to be used against Turks. There was a a single flint which ignited each chamber of the cylinder as it was rotated by hand crank. The gas escaping and fouling must have been horrendous. No one bit but I think this was only because he was really ahead of his time. A model of this firearm is in the Tower of London Armoury.
