Because the dog's penis tip enlarges during coitus. It's a evolution thing....enables them to procreate more effectively. I've heard spraying them with a hose will end it (for now).
I don't know about you but I'm grateful that this doesn't happen to humans! Hose manufacturers would make a mint!

I am not sure on this, so this is just an educated guess. When they mate the penis swells up after ejaculation and they get stuck so that the male has a better chance of fathering all the puppies. It is a survival of the line type thing. If he just got out right after wards, another male would be able to come in behind him and try to get his groove on.

I just researched this (since you asked) and the breeding site I saw said that they can remain locked for upwards of 20 min.

I am breeding 2 miniature dachshunds at the time and they lock together so the sperm stays in place to give her a better chance of conceiving, just leave them alone and in about 15 or 20 minutes, his penis will go down and they will become ulocked. Any other questions go to Dog breeding on the internet.

When they finish mating, doggie style of course, the male dismounts in a sidewards motion. Sometimes the male canine appendage 'stays' inside the female 'receptacle' which in turn leaves the male appendage pointing totally backwards still inside the female and it can't 'pull out' easily or without pain.

It's called getting 'knotted'. It happens when the male dogs penis swells to a fantastic size and literally is jammed inside the females vagina. It has to unswell before it can come out again.

because the male dog reproductive organ swells to "lock" him to her to ensure that as much of his semen gets delivered and therefore more off spring will carry his genes should she mate with another dog shortly there after.

B R's answer is nice,

have you any idea why snakes take a very long time during sex - the penis splits into two and gets strucked in the vagina and it take about hours to get out if it
