I went to five different pet stores (yes, I know a breeder is best but I can't sit around her home and watch as easily so for now..pet stores) and every lovebird I saw just sat. They sat in pairs, some were alone..but all they did was sit. No playing, no hanging. Does anyone actually own one that can tell me from exper?

I have two pairs of love birds and they are all very active. The ones that you are looking at might be stressed from moving from the breeder to the pet store and then being on display. They would act differently once they became acclimated to their new home.

I have 2 lovebirds and a Sun conure! Both of my lovies are very hyper and I keep them seperately caged because well they hate eachother LOL...But when you go into pet stores, sometimes there might be so much noise going on from other birds that it kinda freaks them out, so they just freeze up. Another reason might be is because of temperature or what not. Or depending on what time of day they might have been close to going to bed etc. Theres several different reasons. I would suggest buying from a breeder, most breeders will let you go in their home and see the birds and pick out which ones ya want. I got to see mine grow up from their hatchday and see them all the time so they were pretty much bonded to me when they were weaned. Although I agree with what someone said above, if you want a cuddly bird, lovies are harder to get to do that, one of mine is a big snuggle bug, the other just likes to hang out on my shoulder! A conure would be a good one depending on which one you want. My sun conure is currently sitting in my left hand while I type this, he's a lover, but definitely a one person bird! Good luck in your search!

Some birds in the pet store are not playful for a couple of reasons: people sticking their fingers in the cage and tormenting them and are not usually given very many toys to entice them to play. Because of this they usually sit close to the center of the cage and move around only a little.- mainly to eat and drink. Once they are in a home that they are more comfortable in they will play more. And contrary to some of the other responses, having them in pairs does not affect their playfulness-their personalities do. Pet stores are a hard place to be able to identify the personality, so a breeder is your best bet all around. Good luck!

I have a lovebird that I owned for four years. She is very active and is always hopping around her cage. She is very tame and loves to be handled and petted. My thought is that you are seeing them at a time of day when they are settling down for a nap or they are being cautious and watching to see what you ( a person they do not know) is going to do. My lovebird definitely chirps and plays with toys and hangs. She is very active! Lovebirds are great little pets!

You need to decide what you want from a pet bird. Personally, I think lovebirds are some of the worst pets. They tend to be agressive and they frequently don't like to perch or snuggle. In fact, they are usually hyper compared to other parrots. If you just want a bird around mainly to look at and talk to, it might be fine. You might want to research some other species of parrots, like a cockatiel (need to purchase one that is not aggressive) an Indian Ringneck, or a conure (loving but loud).

I have once babysat this lovebird that had no mate, but it was very playful, owners even taught it to ring a bell on one of it toys and when you said "Ring the Bell Mac" it would go and ring the bell. And if you were standing by the cage he would come to where you are. So once you get a lovebird home and it gets use to you and your household he/she will start to be more playful and play with their toys or even you.

We have one lovebird and she is the greatest bird. Lovebirds in pairs are boring....you might as well buy a pet rock. BUT, by themselves they get attached to you. Ours tries to feed us (it's kinda gross but sweet). Definitely stick with one.
good luck.

They just are 'love' birds.

Beautiful to look at, do bite hard.

that's it.
