I think it really depends on how you feel about the person. Some people know each other as few as a few weeks before getting married while others get married after dating for many years. I know a couple who dated for 10 years before getting married, and I also know a couple who dated for 4 months before getting married, and both of these couples have been equally happy. I personally think I would wait at least a year and a half before getting ENGAGED and a year afterwards before getting MARRIED, so making it about two and a half years.

I know a couple that has just celebrated 25 years (and still happy like teenagers) and they knew eachother 3 weeks before marraige. My own personal opinion is that you should know eachother minimum of 1-2 years before marraige. I've known / lived with my fiance for only 16 months and I've never been happier. So, really each person's amount of time will vary and will depend solely on how well you enjoy your b/f's / gf's presence in your life.

My grandparents knew each other for 6 weeks before they got married, and this year they celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary. But back then, things were much simpler. It really depends on the people, how they feel about each other, etc. I was engaged to someone after being with them for a little more than a year. We broke up about 4 months before we were supposed to get married. You never really know!
