depends on what kind of doctor you want to be...All Medical doctors work long hours and by long I mean really freakin' long...plus there's weekends where you're on call and 24 hour shifts in hospitals etc...It's is good (I'm not a doc tor I'm a nurse) but you don't get as much patient contact as the nursing staff do.

I guess it depends on what kind of medicine (and I'm assuming it's medicine you wish to practice) will depend on patient contact etc.

Good Luck Medicine is a tough field of work that requires dedication and tolerence

It really depends if you are doing it for the right reasons or not. If you want to be a doctor just for the money but don't care about people then I would say it's bad. If you are not a people person then you should never go into the medical field.. If you want to be a doctor because you have a true passion to help people improve their health then it's one of the best things you can do for yourself as well as your patients.. Good luck..

It's not always about helping people. It's not always exciting and glamourous as some TV shows make it out to be. In fact, it's a lot of frustrations....some people just don't want to help themselves or accept our health advice. Some will try to abuse the system and take advantage of you. We always live under constant fear of litigation. We have to follow guidelines. We have to do unnecessary tests to avoid medicolegal complications. We cannot refuse patients. We cannot tell them to f off even if they are acting rude and disrespectfully. We don't always save lives. People die, and sometimes there is nothing we can do. We deal with drunks, drug addicts, violent people, rude and stupid people. But we can't turn them away. We have to deal with everyone of them. It's busy all the time. We have a lot of paper work. We have to deal with colleague who may be arrogant pricks. With ever and rapidly expanding knowledge, we have to keep up...we have to read, study, sit exams after exams. We do shift work. We are on call. Sleep? What? When? Whenever. Wherever.
Do we earn a lot of money? Not enough for all the crap we have to deal with. But then again, we don't have the time to spend it.
Yes, we do care for and about people. Yes, we all said at the medical school interview that we want to help people. But after a while, it just becomes a job. Just like any other. We don't get emotional when we see dying patients. If we got emotional everytime someone dies, we'll burn out...and some of us do. We block it all out and concentrate on the job at hand. We are professionals...no emotions, no feelings, no tears, no care......until we lie alone in our beds during our off duty hours.
We are human beings just like everybody else. Sometimes I wish I had a 9 to 5 easy peasy job. But oh ****, I have to go now.....

it's good because you get the chance to actually help people, to work in a scientific field, to be independant in your job, to make decent money, and you get the prestige of being one of the worlds' oldest and most respected professions.

It's bad because we spend at least 11 years in school. 11 very high pressure years at that, constantly having to achieve, every day. We go into debt, often in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. We make terrible money as residents, have to work long, unforgiving hours on nights, weekends, and holidays, have to sacrifice our social lives and most things outside of medicine. On top of that, when you actually try to help some people, they come back at you with a lawsuit, or an insurance company won't let you treat someone the way you want to treat them, or people forgo your advice built on years of experience and study for some 'new age' cure to a disease that doesn't help them at all. Or my personal favorite, people dismiss you as a thief and tell you you're in the pharmecuetical companies' pockets and creating more disease than you're curing.

It's not easy, it's rough. It's a lifetime of work, but I wouldn't ever consider doing anything else.

I think every job has their goods and bads. I think someone should go for something that they have a heart for. Being a Doctor you need to have a soft heart but a strong emotional or-aha.

I think that it is a good thing to be a doctor, because you help people who are sick, or have problems. And, you can make a decent amount of money. BUT!!! DON'T BE A DOCTOR IF YOUR ONLY MOTIVE IS TO MAKE A LOT OF MONEY. You have to care about people.
