Uh, I'm not an atheist. And what more is there to life than sex? There is no life without sex.

First, Judeo-Christian tradition has always held that single people be celibate. This is taught by Judaism and Christianity from before the Scriptures were written down.

The question should be: Why can't priests marry?

This idea of a celibate clergy came from the Jews, John the Baptist, Jesus, and the Apostle Paul.

The Jews. The Talmud argues that a person whose “soul is bound up with the Torah and is constantly occupied with it” may remain celibate (Maimonides, Laws of Marriage 15.3). For example, Yahweh ordered the prophet Jeremiah not to marry (Jeremiah 16:1-4). Moreover, the Essenes was a group that was active in Jesus’ time that practiced celibacy and thought by most scholars to be the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

John the Baptist and Jesus are both believed to have been celibate for their entire lives. Some scholars believe that the example of the Essenes influenced either or both Jesus and John the Baptist in their celibacy.

The Apostle Paul is explicit about his celibacy (see 1 Cor. 7). There is also evidence in the gospel of Matthew for the practice of celibacy among at least some early Christians, in the famous passage about becoming “eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 19:12).

The concept took many twists and turns over the years and will probably take a few more before Christ returns in glory.

With love in Christ.

Pardon me, but your ignorance is showing!

There is more to life than sex. Some men don't think through their zippers. A life devoted to study and prayer doesn't indicate a physical malformation. It might indicate that the man in question has discovered something worth giving up a physical pleasure.

Realize that ALL VOWS, not just celibacy, come with complications. Does a man's vow of fidelity mean he is not "able" to take on multiple partners? NO. It means that he has found a reason to be faithful to only one. Does a soldier's vow of alleigence mean he is "unable" to think or consider different political views? NO. It means he has found a reason to swear alleigance to one particular country.

Please think before you post your next question. You are making the athiests look bad!

If they're gay or a pervert and happen to be Catholic, it would be a perfect cover for why they don't try to date, to become a priest.

I can't imagine why any straight and/or non-pervert guy would do it.
Give up sex for power?
It's not even that much power, you get to walk around like your holy, but that's about it.

That is a totally asinine question. and I am an atheist, actually I'm agnostic. The point is that was insulting and rude.
