In this day and age of computerised systems, DNA, Fingerprints, etc., i agree the death penalty should be brought back for murder, i dont say hanging, thats a bit barbaric, but death by Leathal injection would do nicely. I'm not a bible basher, but 'an eye for an eye' i suggest, i do think its harse when a person is kept on such as 'death row' for 10 or more years before they get the needle/s, but all the rascial hatred in the UK, murders, stabbings, shootings, why should a normal taxpayer pay to keep someone in Prison for years, especially when its proven without doubt, and no 2 people have the same DNA...or the killer openly admits he/she has carried out the attack i would have no mercy, moreso when it involves children and pensioners....everyday on the news someone has been killed, or blown up, its a terrible world, why cant all these countries that are at war learn to live with each other, because like it or not we are all still human beings, and with the many diseases we can well do without violence as well!!!

I can understand why people might think that the death penalty would help. But, when the death penalty was in full swing (no pun intended)...it didn't exactly reduce the crimes that would lead to the death penalty being imposed!, and the lawbreakers of that time knew that if they were convicted they could possibly face the death sentence!
In my humble opinion, the only positive side to the death penalty would be a reduction in the number of prisoners held in custody, but I'm pretty positive that the courts would deal with reduced numbers by imprisoning more.
Maybe the time has come to look at the penal system and who is incarcerated and in the types of prisons. But society should really be focusing more on the victims of crime not the perpetrators. They can be dealt with by the prison services.

No!!!! Our Criminal justice system is imperfect (as is every other country's). Therefore, having the death penalty it is impossible to rectify mistakes made by our imperfect system.
On the evidence of Prof Roy Meadows - three women were convicted of murdering their infant children. It was subsequently proved that their convictions were 'unsafe' as the evidence used against them was highly dubious.
If the UK still had the death penalty, these innocent women would now be dead.
Remember the Guildford 4, remember the Birmingham 6??? these were innocent people wrongly convicted on concocted evidence by the Police. Again if the UK Government had had the death penalty, these people would not now be walking the streets as innocent victims.
Over the years there have been too many miscarriages of justice to make the death penalty a safe option.

No. That would make you as bad as them, and there's always the risk of putting an innocent to death.
The reason why the Death Penalty was taken away was because an inncoent man was put to death.
It would be more useful to keep these dangerous people alive for study to try and understand what made them kill and work out how to prevent others from doing the same.
Mind you, we do turn normal people into killers and them call them the armed forces.
So maybe would should turn these criminals into weapons.

I support training and support the convicts receive in jail... If they received none of these, they'd have no chance to start a normal life... It'd be very unresponsible to release car-thieves and such into society without money and more education- at least they get a choice on whether or not to continue a criminal lifestyle.
As for Pedophiles, they are sick, not criminal, and should be kept in institutions away from children until such time as they are deemed to be cured or at least so senile that they cannot get an erection for anything or anyone, while still leading a life of integrity.
Terrorists are much like Pedophiles, mentally unstable individuals that need treatment. I don't know about you, but blowing up yourself to kill others is the definition of Crazy.
As for the actual question, killing off the symptoms don't solve the problem. Better putting ex-stabbers to the street as reformed people working for a change than just making them disappear. Of course, there should be more screening for mental and drug problems for inmates, so that prison can be as effective as possible to succeed in its purpose- reforming criminals.

Not sure about the death penalty, but crime in the UK is getting worse as sentences are getting more easier. I think, because our prisons are full, we need to start looking at the real reasons why people are commiting crime. Is it because of unemployment, which leads to poverty? Or are there other causes? But then, there is no deterrent anymore, people think they can do anything because they will get away with it. You hear really bad cases where peadophiles have raped children as young as 1 and end up being put on the sex offenders register and maybe get 5 years in prison, where they are kept with other peadophiles (beacuse they'd get the crap kicked out of them if they were mixed with other inmates) and god knows what they talk about with each other about. They get TV's in their cell and can to courses and training for free, when hard working people have to pay for it. The whole system is wrong.

I think the answer is boot camps for unruly kids, to teacdh them discipline, and also make prisons a place of punishment, not these namby pampy hotels that they are now ! Stick 8 of em in a cell, take away their human rights, they are in prison because they have done wrong ! IT'S A PUNISHMENT !!! Prisoners have too many human rights. You see people like Ian Huntley in a cell by himself being protected from the other prisoners....why ????
The kids have no respect for the police these days..they know they cannot touch them !
This country needs to grow a set of balls ! We're just a big p*ssy at the moment !

Not in my opinion. It doesn't improve things, look at the countries that have the death penalty like the States, it's even worse over there. What we need to do is have a look at our society, especially the media, where films glorify violence as an everyday happening and cultures such as gangsta rap, where the gun is a badge of honour. Our kids are watching all this and taking it in!

Without any doubt. In fact Borstal should be brought back as the first stage deterrent. Then long hard prison sentences. The ultimate being the death penalty. It will not happen while Blair and his Euro PC mob are about.

I am a Christian man and yet I do believe in the Death Penalty. There are some people in this world who do not belong in this world. I have no desire to support them in prison for the rest of their or my life. The Death Penalty is a just solution for certain crimes against society.
