i am a muslim
the answer is no but what is jihad
jihad has two parts a muslim must make any of them regarding lows of islam
part doesnt belong to fight
is self jihad ex. get far from sins
suppose that a person likes smoking very much which is a sin in islam becuse you hurt your body and at this particular momentyou want a sigarete if you kept yourself pationet "i am not smoking so that god forgives me" then you are commiting jihad also telling ppl about islam is jihad
the fight part
either deffensive 'anytime'
or offensive but only when there is a king or a troop and you are asked to participate you may not say no
note: muslims are not allowed to attack but in ertin cases one of them is
if country A is a muslim and country B isn't country A tries to tell ppl of coubnntry B about islam but ppl with control of country B does not allow muslms of counrty A then this is a call of jihad

Osama bin Laden is NOT a true Muslim. Jihad does not mean being a terrorist. Jihad means defending your religion and belief system when people attack it. It does not necessarily mean physical terrorism. When people mention jihad, they usually mean the internal battles one fights with oneself, between good and evil. Jihad only reaches the extent of physical battle when it becomes a war between Islam and another party. Then you must rise up and defend yourself, and only defend, not attack. You may not kill children, women, or old men. You may not harm a tree, or even an animal. You may not steal from the place you are fighting. There are many strict rules Islam puts down to ensure that everything in warfare is fair and judged fairly. Islam does as much as it can to prevent war, and promote peace.
There are also different sects in Islam, many different sects. Please do not believe how the media portrays Islam and Muslims; extremist so-called "muslims" like Osama practice nothing resembling true Islam. So, I say yes, it is not only possible, but it is necessary that you not become a terrorist in your quest for true Islam.
I recommend that you read up more about the Shi'a sect of Islam... don't let the people that hurt themselves and their families "in the name of Shi'itism" deter you from learning more.
In answer to "sophieb"... Islam has no specific nationalities. Islam encourages the joining of different nationalities, on the contrary. Islam was the religion that stopped slavery in the dark ages, and ruled racism as unethical. You cannot say that only Arabs are Muslims, because if you look at Michigan, or some parts of Canada, or even Britain, you will find some of the largest Muslim communities on earth. Some of the Arab Muslims don't even portray Islam as correctly as other Muslims do, and don't take their religion as seriously as a Canadian, a Pakistani, or a British Muslim might. I know not of "an Islam" that is linked solely to one country, as Judaism is linked mainly to Israel. Islam is a worldwide religion.

I didn't see the CNN broadcast (didn't knowi t was on; maybe watching something more interesting). I felt I had to respond to you with my own thoughts, whether or not they are what you are asking. I know for a fact that when a religion is also a nationality and is also politics, that a person who tries to embrace will "never" truly belong to that specific group. The reason is because you can change your religion but you can't change your nationality. Ask any Jewish person and they will tell you that you can change your religion to Judeasm but you can never truly be a part of them (and they mean you can't be a part of their nationality so you are not truly accepted by them if you change your religion).
Answering "your" question. No, I don't believe that someone can become a Muslim at all. They can say they changed, they can feel like they belong, but I don't believe they can be a muslim, let alone a true muslim, because it is part of their nationality.
So those who change to become a muslim, I believe, are fooling themselves....therefore can they take part in jihad, I'd say sure, because they have deceived themselves.

I hope you don't take it as an offense that I, a non Muslim, take part in this conversation.
If I listen to Muslims as carefully as I do then I understand that your question should be answered in the affirmative. Of course, there are some who would love to give an answer in the negative. However, I also understand that Jihad involves a struggle towards faithfulness to God and cannot be reduced to the violence the media are so happy to broadcast.
My ignorance prevents me from quoting the Quaran, but my Christian faith encourages me to listen with attention to what brothers and sisters from other faiths (or not faith at all) have to say.

Jihad doesnt necessarily mean holy war.Jihad is any struggle in the cause of good against evil'. Writing,Speaking etc against evil is also a part of Jihad. Holy war becomes necessary only under special circumstances. There are hundreds of good Muslims who died without waging holy war. So Holy war is not compulsory in Islam.
