I've dyed my hair shades of red for a while now and I'd like to go back to my original mid brown colour though my hairdresser said that no matter what colour I place on top of the red, the red will always shine through. I've dyed it brown myself and it's just went a darker red. Anyone any suggestions? Other than shaving it off or growing it out!

First your hair needs to be lightened to remove most of the red tones. After that you can color any color you want.Be sure to condition between the two steps.

Strip Strip Strip NONONONO. I am a stylist and here is what I do for tint backs. FIRST Stop and don't listen to anyone that says strip or bleach. That will mess your hair up big time. I have a product that I make my stylists use and it makes us look like Gods. It is called Elimin8. It is made by Rusk. It is a color remover what it does is remove oxidized color, that means as long as you didn't use a stain we can remove ALOT of color with it and cause little to no damage. Call around to some salons that specialize in color. Sounds easier than it is but a good colorist is worth the time and money. Again find a salon that use Rusk's Elimin8.You will like the condition your hair leaves in.

The reds i imagine you put in your hair are the funky metallic colours, feria etc. Its the metallic element of the colour that you cant dye over.
You need to let that wear down before you try a flat shade of brown which will hopefully blend in with your natural colour so you wont see your roots as you grow your hair out.

I had this problem with the metallic blues that are on the market.
Tis all ok now just make sure you use a 'flat', old fashioned, shade of brown.

The only thing you can do is strip it and then dye it darker but than will damage your hair.

you need to decide.... would you rather have crap condition hair.. or crap colour hair...... or you could try a wash in wash out for a few weeks until the colour fades and then you can try and grown out the colour..

or you could get some blonde highlights put through it and that may make it easier to live with... im blode and I have gone read before... iv always been able to go back to blonde or dark again with no problem.

It sounds like your hairdresser might not know their stuff. Although you may not be able to directly apply new colour on top of the exsisting dye, you should be able to strip the exsiting colour out of your hair, before applying the new colour. Its called colour correction. Maybe ask your hairdresser about this, or seek advice from a different hairdresser.

You can color it again BUT you must first bleach it out(soap cap) It is very damaging and very expensive but it will get the red out. If your hair is already damaged I would not recommend to do it. Also because you would have to remove the red first once you apply the new color it will fade over a few weeks because the hair is now stripped and darker color applied. Especially if you swim or have well water. You will always be able to find a stylist to perform the service but again if your hair is already damaged a good stylist will not perform the service.

You can bleach it then put the colour you want over it I would recommend going to a different hairdresser and getting a 2nd opinion.

I dye my hair a lot too and I started going to my hairdresser after I noticed my hair getting a bit weak. They have better dyes and a they know how to get the colour you need.

ooooh I have had the same problem, I dyed my whole hair red, but didn't like it, and it's true what the hairdresser said, the red will always shine through, unless you get it bleached of (I mean that the hairdresser can get all color of your hair) it will be very fragile then and it might break, but it's the only way to get rid of the redness. you might have to get a haircut after doing (or having let done) this, because the hair might break of!
