The extension .dot is used for several applications as follows,
- MS Word document template
- Corel Lines-Definition, etc

Let’s say that when you click on the file it is giving the errors message. That means there is a problem with the file type registering. The *.dot must be registered to MS Word not any Movie Player. You can follow the following steps to fix this problem.

1. Open my computer
2. Click “Tools” -> “Folder Options”
3. Click “File Types” tab
4. From the list, select “DOT” type (if the file registration is correct, you will see file type as “Microsoft Word Template”. If not,
5. Click the “Change” button
6. Select “Microsoft Word” from the net dialog box
7. Press “OK” in both dialog boxes
8. Now open the *.dot file back and you’ll see it in MS Word
