Amerigo Vespucci (March 9, 1454 - February 22, 1512) was an Italian merchant and cartographer who voyaged to and wrote about the Americas. His exploratory journeys along the eastern coastline of South America convinced him that a new continent had been discovered.

It comes from Americus Vespucius (1454 - 1512), known as Amerigo Vespucci to his friends. He was a Florentine navigator who made a few voyages out to the new continent, although it is unlikely he ever made it up to North America. Somehow (with no encouragement from Amerigo, I'm sure!) Martin Waldseemüller, a mapmaker of the time, got it into his head that Amerigo discovered the whole continent and so Martin named the lot in Amerigo's honour. By the time the German mapmaker heard otherwise, the name had taken hold!!!

It is named after Richard Americ or Ap Meric who financed an expedition. If it was named after Amerigo Vespucci as used to be believed then the country would have been called Vespuccia not America.

It was named after Amerigo Vespucci, who landed on the Western Continent south of the equator in 1499. His name was given to this country by a German geographer Martin Waldseemuller, who published an account of the four voyages of Vespucci in 1507

Americo Vespuccio, he made the first map of the American Continent, but some scholar argue that America should have been named Colombia, after Christopher Columbus, the official man who discover America!
