As for good books, I'd recommend -
The Pregnancy Book by Dr. Sears
Your Pregnancy Week by Week by ?????
The Birth Partner by Simkin
Birthing From Within by England
Husband Coached Childbirth by Dr. Bradley
The Birth Book by Dr. Sears
Choosing Waterbirth by Lakshimi Bertram
So THAT'S What They're For by Janet Tamero
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by LLL
Your Baby & Young Child: Birth to Age 5 by the AAP
The Baby Book by Dr. Sears
The Discipline Book by Dr. Sears
Adventures in Gentle Discipline by Hilary Flower
I *HATED* the WTE series and the Girlfriend's Guide series.
Keep in mind that the GG series is written by a mom.....she's not any kind of expert, just another mom. So if you want doctors/experts opinions on stuff, it won't fill that need. It's like getting on here and talking to other moms on the computer.

I'm not sure about books but I can tell you that no baby socks actually really stay on unless they're too small. You can breastfeed with pierced nipples but take the pircing out first. It might be a bit more sore than it should be though. I never relied on books with my kids. There are useful tips by real people in the baby club things if you sign up to them. I am with Huggies, Boots and Tesco baby clubs. They're all free and give useful tips and money off stuff. Mostly I ask my mum about everything! I always find that it's best to ask real people who have been through it than books.

I didn't get much out of the What to Expect books, except a lot of worrying about the random, rare things that are possible, but probably won't happen. I LOVED the Girlfriend's Guide books, (Pregnancy, The first Year). the first year one has a LOT of information about the birth and so on. Plus they're kinds funny.

i recommend:
"How Not to Be a Perfect Mother" - by Libby Purves
the best book i read on the subject, (& i read a few.)
i also loved "Making Babies: Stumbling into Motherhood" by Anne Enright - not a very practical guide, but quite soppy.(just don't take too much notice of the bad childbirth chapter - my own experience was great!)
my own practical top tip is that breastfeeding REALLY HURTS at first & you'll wonder if you're doing it right, but after a few weeks you'll be SO GLAD if you hung in there, because it does get better & is a hundred times better than sterilising bottles in the night!

I can answer your question about the baby socks, none ever seem to stay on!!!!!! The number of odd socks found lying under the car seat when my boy was a baby was unreal.

What To Expect When You Are Expecting.......................It is a great book that a lot of OB/GYNS have available in their office, it will tell the mother what to expect and warning signs to watch out for, has information on nutrition, delivery, post-partum care and things for dad as well. It is a very informative book that is easy to read and understand.
