Very bad effects. Alcohol is a poison. Toxin means poison, and intoxication is a state of poisoning, from which the liver much work hard to overcome.

Possible damage includes

Cirrhosis(scarring of liver)

Hepatitis

Jaundice

Complete liver failure.

It is best not to drink alcohol. The liver is the organ that cleanses the body of those types of toxins.

Some research says it is ok to drink small amounts of alcohol.

Long Term use of large amounts of alcohol will damage the liver, and result in an inability of the liver to cleanse the body, and many health problems will result.

Many people drink much alcohol with little apparent effect at first, but the problems will begin to show up before age 50. It is a very unpleasant way to die.

Alcohol will also damage other organs, including the brain cells.

Good Luck

Research studies have emphasized the serious health effects of long-term heavy drinking, from an increased risk for having accidents to developing liver cancer.

Heavy drinking has long be associated with other liver problems, such as cirrhosis, and now a new Italian study links heavy drinking to the development of liver cancer.

Dr. Francesco Donato, a professor of epidemiology and public health at the University of Brescia in Italy, studied 464 Italian men and women diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer, and 824 patients with no liver damage.

Donato's researchers found that drinking more than 60 grams of alcohol a day, equivalent to four to five glasses of wine, was associated with an elevated risk of developing liver cancer for both men and women.

They also found that the risk of developing liver cancer was even greater for patients who had been diagnosed with either hepatitis C or hepatitis B.

Alcohol directly destroys liver cells. When liver cells are destroyed fibrous cells are formed much like a wound heals with a scar . Viral infection of vulnerable liver causes jaundice which again heals like any viral infection. Several small scars in liver change the architecture and cause increased intra hepatic tension . This leads to portal hypertension and enlargement of spleen. Portal hypertension causes ascites ie fluid in abdomen. Fluid in abdomen, enlarged spleen and massive liver fibrosis is called cirrhosis of liver. In an attempt to natural regeneration of liver more liver cells grow at irregular pattern. One such liver cell mass grows relentlessly to become cancer of liver.

Alcohol is "poison" ( as are coffee, certain medicines and a lot of other things). Your liver is the "gatekeeper" of your body and it is the liver's job to break down any poisons that enter your body. To do this the liver works very hard, abuse of alcohol can cause the liver to get "overworked". This will cause the liver to "scar"and it's function will then diminish, leaving your body less capable of coping with poisons that enter it.
