Are there Air Force personnel onboard who pilot these jets or does the Navy have their own pilots? And what rank are these pilots, generally, especially the Commander, Air Group (CAG)?

The US Navy runs their flight school at Pensacola Florida. All Navy and Marine Corps pilots go through that school. When they have completed their training, they are known as Naval Aviators.

There have been several Air Force officers who have completed this training as well, but they are few and far between. Other Air Force officers have become carrier qualified. Again this is a rarity.

The Air Force typically sticks with land based aircraft that say US Air Force on the side.

us navy (and sometimes us marines) pilots. They are trained to operate from carriers whith is much more demanding than operate from a airport. The rank system follows us navy standards (ensign to amiral). CAG is the honor title of a airwing comander (the entire aifleet of a carrier). He or she is an equal to the ships captain and decides everything that has to do with operating airplanes on the carrier. Us navy likes to put carrier pilots in any position that has a bearing about flying and operating aircrafts (pilots decids what pilots shall do). A tip: Read Tom Clancys excellent book CARRIER! You seem to know about the CAG position, so i'm surprised you don't know about Navy pilots. Anyways, yes the Navy does have it's own fighter pilots. Usually they are of Commander or Lieutenant Commander rank.

Navy has trained pilots to operate the Air Crafts based on Aircraft Carriers. Mostly they have their own training facilities. Comparing with Air Force Pilots, they are tained speically to locate and identify the obejct that is floating over the water/marshy lands and certain fast moving torpedos.

Our fine USN Fighter Pilots (TOP GUN...remember that movie...they were NAVY guys.) MARINES also pilot the AV-8 Harrier...so you have to services that fly on the Aircraft carrier. 0-2 or 0-3 are the ranks...I don't konw the names of them though.

My brother is in the Marines and he operates the computers in their planes. He couldn't fly because he doesn't have 20/20 vision.
