it could be various things. you could have had it intra venous which means you had a drip. or you had it with iv antibiotics.
this is a salty solution that contains some elements to mix antibiotics with. you can have it for iv infusions if you have been kept nil per mouth in order to go for your operation or if you are not eating after surgery.
saline could be use to clean wounds.
it is also sometimes used for contact lens cleaners- but not recommended as this contains a salt solution.
i don't think that you would have got it as in injection into your muscle with a needle but rather intra venous.
i am a nurse so i deal with this daily.
get well soon.

A saline solution is basically buffered water, so the solution has the ideal pH and this pH is stable. It's used for various things, the most common you'll come across outside the hospital or laboratory is probably for storing and washing contact lenses. It's most likely to be phosphate buffered saline which contains potassium phosphate and sodium chloride.

in medicine, saline is a solution of sodium chloride in sterile water ,used commonly for intravenous infusion, rinsing contact lenses, and nasal irrigation or jala neti.
saline solutions are available in various concentrations for different purposes.
normal saline is used for intravenous drips for people who cannot take fluids orally and have developed severe dehydration.other concentrations are frequently used for other purposes ,such as suppling extra water to dehydrated patients unable to take them by mouth.Intravenous solutions with reduced saline concentrations typically have dextrose added to maintain a safe osmolality while providing less sodium chloride.
the normal amount of saline infused depends largely on the needs of the patient but is typically between 1.5 and 3 litres a day for an adult.

It's a saline solution so that when it is delivered via IV, the osmolality of the solution matches that of your cells. If it was water only, fluid would move through cell membranes into your cells causing them to burst (lyse).
