Mini toy chihuahua. Mine is absolutely devoted to my 4 month old baby since I was 2 months pregnant, won't let anyone other than me approach her especially if she's asleep.

a lot of it will depend on the age of the children. We got a black lab for my daughter for her 8th birthday and it was great but the dog is getting bigger and she is small for her age and it can get a little rough in play, but they are excellant dogs for kids. A collie is a wonderful dog for children and will "herd" them away from dangers and is very protective of them. If the children are real small I would start with a beagle or a rat terrier as they are both small breeds and very playful. chiuaus (chiwawa I can't spell) are very nervous and not a good idea for a small child as with some of the other small breeds. If in doubt call your local vet and ask them they will be more than happy to give their opinion.

I have had many different dogs,I would strongly recommend a rat terrior, they are a lot like a child,my daughter is 13,she has had 2 in her lifetime so far and it truely is her best friend. They are a very loving dog and at the same time they will protect a child. They have an extremely high intelect,I do suggest getting a female in what ever dog you do decide to choose, they are much easier to train and seem to be much smarter as well, good luck

The best known dog for a child is a Boxer. They are playful but very protective, studies have shown that no dog is better when children are around, however Labradors and Golden Retrievers are next in line.

When I was a kid we had a terrier/poodle mix. I loved that dog...played with it and all...but one day I went down to give it a hug and it bit me. Soooo we decided to get another dog...We got a Sheltie (Shetland Sheepdog) that dog I did everything to from dress it up, take its food away from it, cuddle with it... not once did that dog ever be mean or try and bit me. It just sat there and took it. Now I'm all grown up and have two Shelties and let me say my kids love it to death! Both are the best and gentliest dogs I've ever seen.

So my personal opinion a Sheltie is the best one. Plus it only took me 2 weeks to house train the dogs! And they are medium size not too big or too small.

Beagles are great with children and VERY smart! (remember Snoopy?) My second chose would be either a German Shepherd, again highly intelligent and protective, that's why cops use them, or a lab, they are just big babies!

but you should also consider costs of grooming, feeding, and how much time you have to spend with the dog also. Beagles and Labs need a lot of playtime and love to run. so you should either be able to take them for daily walks/runs or have a nice fenced yard for them to play in.
Congratulations and good luck!

I have 2 pitt bulls and a one year old. my dogs are very east with her and gentle...it all depends on how you raise the dog... you could have a "hot dog"(daushound) and if it isnt used to kids its going to attack when the baby tries to play.
