I have bought a wine making kit and am making some lovely blackberry wine. Gas is escaping from the twisty tube in the bung.
I had to ask just in case it is explosive or something

Hi Andy, Welcome to the world of Wine making....may all you bottles be clean and all your glasses full !

Its just CO2. There are a few other smells to look out for but any introductory book will summarise them for you. None are dangerous.

Hope it goes well. You need to get a stock of 300 bottles. That stops you being tempted to drink it too soon, you have enough stock to pick and choose a bottle thats couple of years old.

Just CO2...if there's a hint of rotten egg smell, it's H2S (hydrogen sulfide) which is less common, but perfectly normal...also non-explosive, just a bit funky. Better out than in :)

What you're seeing is actually the indicator that the fermentation is going well.

It is CO2 and it is the same gas that dissolves in wine to make the bubbles in sparkling wine. Harmless.

When yeast eats sugar (whether in beer or wine) it creates CO2 and alcohol. Do not worry about your house filling up with CO2 and suffocating yopur family. It won't create that much.

It's CO2, so anything but explosive.

How do you make blackberry wine? That sounds delicious!

Carbon Dioxide, plants produce it during anabolic respiration along with another great bi product called Alcohol.
