By "fits" I assume you are talking about seizures. Seizures can be caused by numerous things, but the most common form of epilepsy is idiopathic, where no cause can be determined.

Since you've been taking your dog to a vet for the past year, most certainly he has done lab work to try to find the cause. The vet should have prescribed phenobarbital to control the seizures. You need to give the phenobarb in such a way that they blood level remains constant and don't miss a dose.

Also, sometimes you can find a trigger that leads to seizures such as excitement or exercise.

I have a female mixed dog. Her name is Lucy and she had fits about two years ago. It also happened about every two weeks. Our vet started a treatment with heart medication on her because her heart was not beating right and this caused the brain to get not enough oxygen.
She takes a small pill every two days now and it really helps. First the fits started getting less and now she doesn't have any fits at all.
The name of pills is Lanitop, but I don't know if you can get them in the states because I live in Germany. But maybe your vet can give you something similar. Make your vet check your dog's heart though before you start giving him heart medication. Hope I helped.

I assume by "fits" you mean seizures. I'm epileptic and I resent seizures being called "fits". What is this? The seventeenth century? Are we going to start being locked away again too? Anyway, I've heard that some dogs can be treated with phenobarbitol. Has your vet tried this anti-seizure medication for your poor dog? If it is seizures, I feel sorry him. And you.

My dog has epilepsy...it wasn't diagnosed until he had his 3rd fit - and it was a bad one.

He takes an adult dose of Phenobarbital every day and has done so for the past 13 years.
He's had maybe....3 seizures since that time.

I won't even hazard a diagnosis; I will suggest alternative (holistic) veterinary medicine. Since western medicine seems to have failed to bring results, what have you to lose by getting a second opinion? Much luck.
