Compression Ratios (the percentage to which a particular file can be compressed) is largely dependent on the type of file.

For example text files and Word doucuments can be compressed to a great extent. Same is the case with BMP files.

But picture formats like (jpg, gif) are hard to compress. Similarly mp3, mpg and dat files are also hard to compress.

It very much depends on the type of file it is. Most files can be compressed one way or another. Some can be compressed many ways (audio, video,pictures...)... Compressed more by decreasing the quality... WinZip or PKZip are good for data / program files / folders

Have you tried to use compression programs like winzip, 7zip etc. Windows XP has built in compression capability.

Depends on the file type. Pictures and music don't compress very much, but text files do. Try winzip.

Depends on what your file is. I know programs which compress 1 GB to 200 MB or so. So, depends on your file, program and comp load (if you dont know what that is, sorry)

Get WinZip and use gzip or bzip. In my experience both of those have been better than zip.
