I want to address a slightly different angle to this question. Everyone refers to "dying of cancer". That concept feels too far away especially when people say things like" everybody is going to die of something". All of you justifiers out there PLEASE read this:
To die of lung cancer is painful and brutal with or without treatment. IN ADDITION almost every long term smoker and second hand smoker develop emphysema. DO YOU justifiers know what that feels like and looks like? Go ahead and google those diseases. If you prefer to die suffocating over a long period of time, it feels like never being able to catch your breath, having fluid collect in your legs until the skin breaks and fluids leak out. do you want to die of regret while your family stands around you weeping knowing that you had a heavy hand in such a terrible way to die? The people who love you will suffer every step of the way with you. Is this your choice?

Don't know. I never started...

But it's their choice. None of us gets out of this life... alive. As long as they don't make _me_ a passive smoker, that's ok (there are people whose company I value enough to tollerate being smoked around. But even for them, when they visit my flat, the smoking place is on the balcony. I have to live in these rooms when they go away!)

Smoking - been proven to kill and it is not good for anyone to smoke. No one can ignore that fact. Yes I smoked for 28 yrs, thinking I was indestructible and that it was never going to effect me, and when it did I would just quit. That's the attitude of allot of smokers mind you. They are the exception to the rule. Recently had surgery for an Achilles tendon repair, and got read the riot act about smoking and circulation, healing, etc. Hit really close to home. No more smoking for this private. It's time, and please younger ones, it;s not worth it to do, IT WILL CREATE HEALTH PROBLEMS LATER IN LIFE. Mark my word.

Habit and Addiction. I dont smoke to "act cool." Its just a hard habit to break. Yes, it does affect ur health. So does the foods you eat and the sun rays and etc...
Actually, look at George Burns who died at 100 years old after smoking cigars all of his life. My family has never died to smoke related diseases. I grew up on second hand smoke and im very healthy and atheletic. Just depends on the person??

no, they do know that it can kill, i smoke, I just read what the hell was all in cigarettes, but i have been smoking for 8 years and do you have any idea how hard it is to quit? Everyone has bad habits and for some people that is their only bad habit, so its hard to stop.

Because cigarettes are 4 times more addictive than heroin and that is why it is so hard to stop smoking

Honestly, I find smoking is very mentally addicting. The physical addiction is nothing in comparison to the mental habit.

I don't even think about it anymore. It's just something I do, particularly when I'm bored or uncomfortable.

Also, in social situations, it keeps my hands busy and allows me to feel more comfortable.

On the whole, I also simply enjoy it.

Because we are addicted to the tobacco or things in the tobacco-probably the nicotine. It is a curse of an addiction. I have quit many times but keep getting sucked back into the "drug' again!

Well, for one, because it is more addicting than heroin. I have tried on several occasions to quit, to no avail. Unfortunately, I enjoy it too much!

Non-smokers have no idea how hard it is to quit smoking!
