Metabolism is increased by exercise and by eating. Also the more muscle cells one has, the higher the metabolism, and the more calories being used.

Increasing muscle mass is a simple method - muscle cells, even at rest, require a lot of energy to maintain.
Increasing your intake of caffeine is also effective - as long as you are careful to increase your water intake as well (one cup H2O for every cup of caffienated beverage)
Taking a combination of ephedra and caffeine works in the short run (these are the active ingredients in most modern diet pills), but with potentially dangerous side effects. The resulting metabolic effect also goes away after you stop taking them, so the long term benefit is about nil.

Green Tea, four meals a day and Exercise. People don't know that eating raising your metabolism as well as drinking cold water. Exercise gives you a serious boost as well, and you continue to burn more calories long after you finish working out.

Drink a glass of warm water every half an hour or every one hour. And sit in an A C room. If you take warm water and avoid sweat your metabolism speeds up. If warm water is not tasty you can add an artificial sweetening agent. No side effects. No complications.
