Make them walk the dog even if it is raining! The dog won't melt if it gets wet! Then make sure they've brought an old towel or towels with them and make them dry their dog when they get back - including paws and underbelly. My mum's dogs go out for walks whatever the weather, and they are always dried off properly if it's been wet outside.
You could get some special pet snacks for the dog from your local pet shop, but other than that, why would you need to entertain a dog? The occasional pat and word of praise should be enough. As for your in laws, just encourage them to talk about themselves and their lives, and make sure they are comfortable, with plenty to eat and drink, and that they know where the bathroom is if they need it. They will think you're wonderful.
My mum just likes to feel welcome. My ex made her feel miserable and unwanted, as did my brother's ex, but my man that I'm with now, he makes her feel so welcome she thinks he's God's gift to mothers in law!

Sometimes it is good to have inlaws home, as they are your family and the closest people in your life. In happiness and in sorrows they will be the first one to be next to you to share your feelings, u shld consider yourself lucky that you have inlaws, some people are all alone, which is pretty sad.
There are many things you could do to keep them entertained. Bring them out for shopping, day picnic near the lake or park, dinners, fruit market, flee market, bbq party, etc....thts how the time will pass....
You should share feeling with them to, believe it or not they would really appreciate your closeness...
Regarding the dog.....aaaahhhhhh a mutt, hehhehehehe, keep the dog happy too, afterall the dog just need love...when you are away, leave the dog at your back yard or garage....if you are home, play acouple of toss and pet ocassionally....he'll be a good dog, dont worry...
No matter what, blessing from the elders will take you to a smooth and stable life in the future....

Entertaining their dog is not your responsibility! If they have a dog that goes crazy and destroys things, why should you accept it in your house? Make a stand. I had a similar problem and the final straw was the dog poohing on the bed. I no longer allow the dog in my house. Stand up for yourself, it's your house. Don't be a doormat.

Tell them to take care of their own dog. That'll keep them busy.

Recommend a kennel if they can't find someone to care for it. Why should you or your furniture suffer?
