Is of course possible that egg was shaken violently somehow before being cracked open and that was the cause of the yolk breaking whilst still in shell which could have been reason for runniness once opened,. Sell by dates though are only guidelines and are also dependent on whether or not the item in question has been stored and transported in the appropriate manner, i.e. not like myself who sometimes goes shopping and then leaves goods in car overnight as too tired to unpack and then forget about them for a couple of days

A fresh egg will have three distinct layers to it when cracked onto a plate.

The Yolk, a raised layer of clear egg white around the yolk, and then the rest of the egg white.

If it doesn't have these three, then it's not really fresh enough for poaching or mayonaise but should be OK if really well cooked.

From the sounds of your egg it's not fit for eating at all.

If it's running, it's probably safe to say it's not suitable to eat. Test your eggs before you crack them by putting them in a bowl of cold water - if it sinks, it's OK - if it floats, throw it away.

The white of a really fresh egg will be raised around the yolk and shelve down towards the edge.

I'd throw yours away and find a fresher one just to be on the safe side.

Does it smell bad? is it in date? if it doesn't smell bad and it is in date, just bloody eat it and stop worrying! Although now weather it was off or not, its gonna taste funny because you have put yourself off it. (Hate it when that happens!)

The test for a bad egg is to put it in water if it sinks its a good egg if it floats it has air inside it and therefore is a bad egg! Only works before you've cracked it though obviously!

You can always tell if an egg is off once you have cracked it open by the smell. Its unmistakable. If you haven't cracked it the float/sink test is the way to tell.

Put the uncooked, uncracked egg into a bowl of cold water. If it floats it's gone off.

Once its open its normally the smell that will give it away as being off!

i usually test eggs in a bowl of water if i'm not to sure, do this by placing the whole egg including shell (uncracked) into a bowl of water. If it sinks its fresh if it floats throw it away. Hope that helps

Dae (us36) is right all the way. However, when in doubt throw it out!!! better to waste an egg than get food poisoning

'fraid so - it's gone!!! - throw it away. In future when you crack an egg - do it over a container - (other than the one you are intending its use for) so that, as this instance it doesn't taint whatever other ingredients you are using and you can then try another one.

It will smell really bad! Also if you shake it lightly before you crack it open and it makes a deep thud then its most probably not safe!! If unsure crack into a separate bowl and smell before using it!
