I just read an article on-line that said aspartame was originally made as an ant poison and then the government realized they could make more money selling it as a sweetener, so they changed the formula. I have put aspartame on fire ant beds, and they have disappeared. My mother uses only aspartame and I have made her stop using it just to be on the safe side.

Aspartame - is a common artificial sweetener found in all sorts of diet products. It is the sweetener in Sweet & Low and Diet Coke. The amount you would get in 10 sticks of gum is probably a lot less than what is in a 20oz diet soda. Some people and few studies have linked aspartame consumption to cancer. The EU briefly identified it as a carcinogen, and was immediately convinced to change its position by a landslide of epidemiological studies showing no association between aspartame and cancer. The FDA has identified aspartame as safe for consumption for a long time.

Aspartame probably is a carcinogen at certain very high levels, but at what levels no one has been able to identify in humans. Considering that certifying aspartame as a carconogen would be the biggest thing since the tobacco settlement, it is unlikely that the food industry would go quietly into that good night. Food lobyists and funded researchers do a lot to convince everyone on the planet that you can consume all the Aspartame you want.

The sugar alcohols and aspartame from gum in negligible. However, xylitol (from trident) is the only one that won't be broken down by bacteria on your teeth, so it is better for them.
