1973 was when it was removed from the DSM.
"In 1952, the original Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) listed homosexuality among the sociopathic personality disturbances.
In 1968, DSM II removed homosexuality from the sociopathic list, categorizing it with other sexual deviations.
Then in 1973, the DSM III showed the most striking change of all: homosexuality was considered a problem only when it was dissatisfying to the person. When the condition was compatible ("ego-syntonic")--and the person was comfortable with his homosexual thoughts, feelings and behavior--homosexuality was not considered pathological"

I am afraid that it is still some sort of mental disorder, a temporary disorder, which could go permanent without treatment. It could also be a way of living -yes, but some sort of opposition to the society, which haven't been nice to them or they might feel that they are nothing, but as a homosexual, they are something at least. If you can't be the best one can always be the worst one, I have been told.
Once upon the time the was a man called Benedictus of Nursia, who was rejected by a woman and do you know what he did? He was tumbling around in rosebushes, but after that he formed an order of men who have had been into the same and built a cloister. They were not able to solve normal incidences in a normal life.

I don't know that the thought that it is a mental disorder or birth defect has ever changed. The fact that it is more widley accepted maybe makes more think that it is not considered a mental defect but as far as science it is still viewd the same, relativly.

I believe in 1973 when the American Psychiatric Association removed it from its list of mental disorders. It's sad that it took them that long, not to mention their methods of "treating" homosexuality.

My aren't we the judgemental one. Most of my gay friends are so much healthier then the straight ones, they arent as likely to be bigots, or war mongers, or strait jacketed by some macho image. I know your young and you think your clever but don't be immature all your life. You will NEED an open mind and little more humanity to survive the fun thats coming our way.
