Specifically, anybody know what makes one chair comfortable and another uncomfortable? What are some of the common materials used in chairs like office chairs and recliners? Surely it isn't just foam. That wouldn't explain why some chairs can withstand abuse and others (usually cheaper) fall apart within a year. Hope somebody knows something about this. I've just spent five hours researching on the internet and I can't find nothing.

Mostly it depends on the chair. Most of them have some sort of padding (foam, etc.) and a lot of how well they 'hang together' has to do with how good the foam is, the kind(s) of materials used for the covering, how the entire chair is built.

Some of the really good ones even have springs (like an innerspring mattress) in them

As for why some of them 'feel' better..... it's the same as with women: Some of them just fit better than others ☺

You would have been better served by going to a furniture store and checking this out. Don't you know that some stores have good looking and informative sales girls ?
