the standards are too high: everyone's got to be Successful, have a great career, have tons of friends, be happily married with gorgeous kids (at least one daughter and one son), have a lovely house, be fit and sleder, have an amazing sex life, great health, etc etc..
And if you dont have one or more of the above, then you have a reason for depression, and oops here you are all stressed and depressed. I keep telling myself and many others to take life easy, but it is so hard to find the right balance between wanting success and not being depressed..

Why did we come out of the trees? Why did we invent tools?

We have developed a trait of being dissatisfied, which is good for us as a species, it makes us better survivors but at a cost of happiness as individuals. Luckily some people are not so genetically advanced and are happily stupid.

Look into the great thinkers, (bare in mind how many people hide their depression, particularly in the past when it could mean a death sentence)

One of the reasons many people are depressed is that they think too much about what they haven't got rather than focussing on what they do have. There is too much emphasis on being wealthy, successful, handsome, pretty, young, clever etc etc. Many people who aren't any or all of these things feel unhappy and discontented. Others who are wealthy, handsome etc realise that these things have nothing to do with happines. I believe that parents and the media are to blame for this as they impose these values on children at a very early age

Hopefully you are incorrect about "everyone" being depressed. I, for one, have not been depressed since childhood after being stripped naked and having the you know what beat out of me for not putting my ponytail up correctly. So Cheer up and look in the mirror every single morning and let the big guy on the top floor (you know, J.C.) that you can enjoy his sunshine one more day!

Many factors are responsible. In the book, "Generation Me" the reason why so many are depressed is due to the many choices we are capable of making. We are overwhelmed and fear making the wrong choice. Also, we are raised on the idea that we are special just because we are breathing. We believe that we deserve things, 'just because.' Since real self-esteem comes from accomplishment, we are slighting ourselves. People are more isolated (i.e., not knowing neighbors, using techology-as in text messaging, emails; less human contact) and through independence we gain isolation.

Not me! My motto is try not to let life get you down and have fun whenever possible. I've just got paid and my bills have wiped me out for the week so I'm annoyed about that but at the end of the day you just need to get yourself out of that "down" feeling by thinking positive. I may have to feed my family on beans on toast until next Friday but at least we have a roof over our head! Turn negative into a positive and think of what you do have. That may help.
