Dogs develop hemolytic anemia if they eat enough onions. I don't think that it matters too much
whether the onions are cooked or not. The quantity of onions required is high enough that dogs
can generally tolerate small doses of onions without any problem. If in doubt make him vomit them up by giving him Hydrogen Peroxide.

HERES AN ARTICLE I FOUND

Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body.
At first, pets affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhoea. They will show no interest in food and will be dull and weak. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected animal’s urine and it becomes breathless. The breathlessness occurs because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number.
The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness.
Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. A single meal of 600 to 800 grams of raw onion can be dangerous whereas a ten-kilogram dog, fed 150 grams of onion for several days, is also likely to develop anaemia. The condition improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion

Generally a little onion will not hurt your dog very much f at all. Unless he/she's eating around .5% of his /her weight in onions it's not much of an issue. Keep an eye on the dog if he vomits, starts breathing heavy, or has really bad diarrhea don't worry. If it was a small amount he'll likely just have some gas, and the runs.

No, an onion won't hurt him. However, onions on a regular basis can cause anemia..Just keep them away from him, since you have discovered that he ;likes them..
Here is a clipping from a veterinary site>
The toxic effect of the onions are the same whether the product is raw, cooked or dehydrated. The hemolytic episode usually occurs several days after onion ingestion (lowest hematocrit around day 5 post ingestion). Daily feeding of onions could have a cumulative effect due to ongoing formation of Heinz bodies versus a single exposure with a wide gap until the next exposure, allowing the bone marrow time to regenerate the prematurely destroyed red cells.
these are the symptoms she says to watch for> The signs that you see will depend on the amount of onions consumed, the length of time they have been fed, and the size of the animal. Gums (mucous membranes) may appear pale if there is moderate or severe anemia/ If lots of RBCs have ruptured, there may be hemoglobin in the urine, causing it to appear reddish or brown ..
I strongly recommend NO ONIONS for dogs. There is no benefit and certainly the potential to cause harm.

Onions are not good for a dog, but it depends on the size of your pet. If it was a small amount, he should be ok. Keep a close eye on him, and if he acts oddly, get him to the vet asap.

Remember, onion and garlic are flavoring agents in dog food. In small amounts they are ok, but if you have a small dog and he ate more than a few pieces, then I would get him to the vet.

If you are in doubt, call your local vets - they should have an answering service and the vet will call you back. He or she will be able to tell you what would be a toxic amount for your pet based on it's weight, age, etc.

Best of luck! Hope he's ok!

My dogs have eaten onions before and they were fine, just obviously didn't like the taste of them much because they spat them out, but, being dogs, promptly ate them again.

Just keep an eye on him for the next few hours. If he shows any really irregular signs like vomiting profusely, problems with or excessive pooping, things like that, definately take him to the vet in the morning. Don't worry though, it may just make him a little nauseous, but it won't kill him.

He should be fine.. A little will not hurt them. If it's cooked don't worry about it at all.

Just keep an eye on him and if he vomits take him in, but otherwise i would not worry..
