In Mormon doctrine, the golden plates containing the content of the "book of Mormon" were taken back to heaven by the last survivor of the Nephites, the angel Moroni, who appeared to Joseph Smith in 1820, once the contents had been scribed for distribution.

Whether you accept this to be fact or not is purely at your discretion, personally I accept it to be a masterful piece of religious propaganda.

Joseph Smith both discovered and produced the Book of Mormon in a context of magic/ divination/ clairvoyance. The so called golden plates were not necessary!!

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has published many pictures of Joseph Smith dictating the Book of Mormon. These depictions invariably show Joseph seated at a table, carefully examining the gold plates which are in front of him on the table. The impression given is that the dictation process involved Joseph’s direct visual contact with the plates.

However, this scenario does not square with the testimony of those who were eyewitnesses to Joseph Smith dictating the Book of Mormon. These witnesses include all three of the Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon (the same individuals whose testimony appears in the front of every copy of the Book of Mormon), as well as Joseph Smith’s wife, Emma Hale Smith. They tell a similar story of Joseph dropping a magical seer stone into his hat, then burying his face in the hat and proceeding to dictate the Book of Mormon. Joseph claimed to see in the darkened hat the words he dictated."

Joseph Smith was a sociopath and created the church of Mormon for power and influence. The Mormon church is a cult.

The plates that Joseph was instructed by the Lord to uncover in New York is an ancient document, written by the hands of former inhabitants of the American Continent, thousands of years before Columbus even hit land. They tell of Jesus's visit to this continent after his resurection and his teachings.

An angel was supposed to have led him to the place where the gold plates were hidden under a bolder. AS far s I know the church did keep then for transcription and they are still under lock and key.like the hope diamond and the Constitution are.

This is a two-chanced resolution:
A) He made it up, morman is a cult, like the first guy said.
B) He dropped them and they shattered, or are lost.

P.S: The only reason I put B is because by the sound of it you sound morman.

Yeah, you got to love it. "Hey folks, I found a bunch of magical writings that establish a whole new religion with me as it's head. You can't see them though, only I can see them. They're..um..returned to heaven, yeah that's it!"

It just goes to show how absurd the entire concept of religions is and how gullible people are.
