I am single in the early 20s and none of my friends are interested in traveling. I'm from New york city, and would like to go to New Orleans beacuse it has always interested me, the southern culture, french quarter, etc. Is it wrong for me to travel alone?

Ive been to quite a few places around the world by myself, and I have to say it is the ONLY way to travel.

Basically, my mates are too lazy/broke/lame to want to travel any further than the pub, so if I want to go somewhere, I have to go by myself, and it's great: You dont have to look out for anyone but yourself. You can go where you want & do what you want without someone complaining (which happens no matter WHO you go with), and if you want company, just go down to the bar or wherever and meet some people there. Most travellers bars around the world are FULL of lonely travellers looking for someone to talk to, so it's easy.

The way I figure it, I shouldnt have to miss out on seeing what I want just because my friends dont want to go, and neither should you. New Orleans sounds awesome, so go!

Well, last I checked, there is no law- written or moral- that says it's wrong to travel alone. So no, it's not wrong.

Why limit your experiences in life because your friends have inhibitions?

Some of the best experiences in my life have been achieved by traveling alone and meeting people. Certainly, if you're from NYC, you don't need lessons on using good judgement with strangers and dangerous environments- you probably have a good sense of this already.

Traveling alone is as much discovering a new place as it is learning something about yourself. Do it!!!

Hi Evil.... i am assuming you are a guy??? If so... why not wait until you are 21,,, then come down, , you can drink legal then and go to the casino.... legal....

If you do come down... let me tell you this... it is almost like Marshall law down town..... there are police and soldiers there all over the french quarter......because of the hurricanes we had last year......ok
You can still have a good time..... just dont mess up ,, or you will end up in jail.. I promise .......
If I were you,,,,, I would wait until next year and come for Mardi Gras... look on next years calander and find Ash Wednesday.... count backward from the Tuesday before about 2 weeks and that is when Mardi Gras will be.... or look up nola.com

good luck

if possible, try not to go out late at night alone because even on hopping bourbon street, being alone can have its dangers. just since you are travelign alone, id check out somewhere to stay in the french quarter and id go to the flea market and the farmers market might be back so check there. going alone to new orleans wont be so bad if you stay away from certain places after dusk and dont get involved with anything not your business. you can go anywhere in new orleans but i suppose you be to your hotel area by nightfall because not all places have electricty back in the streetlights and even the schools
and bring your idea, its 18 to get into bars and 21 to get into bars and buy yourself a drink have funn

Nothing wrong with traveling alone in my opinion. In fact, I love traveling alone.

However, there are downsides to it. If you are female, you would have to be extra alert and try not to travel to anywhere "unsafe" or where a single woman would be vulnerable. Also, the only two times I wished I wasn't alone on travels is when it is inconvenient like going to the loo, for example. Second is cost factor. It's obviously cheaper to share costs.

Wrong? Of course not. Why shouldn't you enjoy your own company?

Wise? Probably not. If something happened to you, who would know? And there is added safety in numbers, sad as it is that one must consider such things. Male or female, you're better off with a companion.

How about looking into something like this: http://www.travel-companion.net/

Have fun!

No. It sounds like you have a lot of strength and independence. Have you seen Under the Tuscan Sun? It's about a woman who tours Italy and ends up buying a house and staying there by herself. I admire your courage.

I did a trip alone here, I am now married and live here. The people here are very kind and friendly. You will be safe here. You have to be a little cautious anywhere.
