Once again, the yahoo lawyers are claiming more BS. There is no federal law banning silencers, machineguns, or short barrel shotguns. They do require a $200 tax, a sign off from the local sheriff, and an atf form 1 or 4 to make or buy one.

I make my own silencers using a lathe, drill, grinder, hacksaw and my own designs. They are easy to make, just a tube with baffles. The silencer must be mounted very straight to the bore, or the bullets will strike the baffles, resulting in poor accuracy, or complete destruction of the silencer. A good silencer will reduce noise down to about 120-130 decibels, depending on the firearm and the suppressor.

If you want to make your own, you must live in one of the 35 states that allow civillian ownership. Download an ATF form 1 from the ATF or subguns websites, fill it out and get the local sheriff to sign it. Then attach two passport sized photos, fingerprint cards, and the required form attesting to your US citizenship. Expect to wait 1-6 months for approval. Do not start making the silencer until the form is approved and in your hands. As soon as you make the tube portion, engrave it with the required info; name, address, and serial number.

Just be sure to make it right the first time. Making a silencer on an ATF form 1 does not allow you to replace damaged parts. Repairs are allowed, but if you need a part replaced, then it has to be sent to a licensed manufacturer for repair/replacement. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions about silencers.

These people dont know anything. First, it depends on what state you are in if they are legal or not. In Idaho (my state) they are legal but you cannot hunt with them. You need a class A federal permit ($300), the same as a fully automatic weapon.

Go to the link below or Google on your own but dont listen to the folks above as clearly they have no idea wht they are talking about.

The only effective silencer is a purchased one, which you have to register with the ATF, otherwise it's a felony.

Silencers are nothing else but a long tube with several built in chambers in it. A quick silencer is a potato. All kind of silencers are a felony charge.

This is an item that must be registered with the BATF, like machineguns, and it's costly to do it. I've known 2 or 3 guys who made them. They were machinists. I don't have the equipment or the knowledge, and you probably don't either.
