There's no accurate formula or steps, or even secret potion into making a better relationship. It all depends on the couple involved. But my advise would be, always keep the communication lines open at all times. You don't have to discuss every single detail but at least both of you should be open to discussion.
Also, i think what are essential in making a relationship work are TRUST, RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING. Difficulties may come your way, you can not avoid that. But if you will help each other in making the relationship work, it will work.

Learn to relate to each other really well. Make sure you both read each other, and take notice of what each other truly needs and wants. Spend time asking about your partner, and encouraging them to ask about you. Even if you talk about things that you already knew about each other.
Find interests in common, and find outside interests away from each other (you will have fun relating to each other about your outside interests, and it will deepen your relationship)
Never ever go to bed angry with each other.
Always talk things over that may be bothering you, don't bottle it up.
Be sure to always find something to appreciate in your partner. I've found that this pulls me through the hard times in my own relationship. Never ever lose sight of what you saw in them in the first place.
Always make sure that you spend some time with them after being apart, even if its walking up to them and kissing them hello; wrap your arms around them and tell them you love them and that you missed them.

Load it with Love, Respect and Trust. =) maturity also matters. a relationship will be as better as you want it to be if both of you are willing to give and take, listen and speak, trust and be trusted. The question shouldn't be 'what can i get from this relationship but what can i Give for this relationship'. think about that. of course, the best thing here is Make God the center of it. pray and believe.
