check engine light was on. The machanic said the bsm... or he may have said the psm (I couldn't catch the first letter) wasn't responding. He said it is a $500.00 part but I would have to be careful because there is no way of telling what fried it out or if it would happen again after it was replaced. Does anyone have a clue what this is and how big of a problem it is??

I think you mean
PCM = Powertrain Control Module
BCM = Body Control Module

First step you need is the stored codes and the problem you are having and a ASE shop with a real mechanic that can tell you what took out the PCM/BCM

A check Engine lamp on does not actually mean you need a PCM/BCM but it could --Mopar generally have decent ECMs (computers) and dont fail often

The PSM is part of the engine control computer to the right side of the engine compartment, (passenger side.) Also known as a power supply module, it's the part of the computer that takes the place of the voltage regulator and distributes the power the other parts of the electrical system. Before you replace it you should replace the crankshaft position sensor, halifax switch, (also known as a pick up coil,) and the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. If any of these components burned it out, then this would prevent that from happening again. Also a power surge could cause it, such as removing the negative wire from the battery while the truck is running, connecting the battery up backwards, and trying to jump start another vehicle while the truck is running.

He was probably talking about the pcm (powertrain control module)...Is there any drivability problem or is just the check engine light on. If you do replace it, the vin and mileage will have to be programed in.. Best to take it to a dodge dealership for that...

As long as they are the same width and dimensionally similar.Example if you have p214 60 r 16 now they need to be p235 60 r16.It can make a difference in the handling and drive.It can sometimes throw your speedometer off by a mph or two.As far as hurting your truck no it wont.
