Ok, just walked in from work. Busy night. Made great tips. I am having some trouble with like being so hyper. Trying to serve all my customers at the bar plus fill orders for the servers. I am like rushing. I don't even eat anything and work a 8 hr shift. I mean, nothing. I am so wired. I have tried to calm down, chill and take a deep breath but I am trying so hard to do well that I think I am affecting everything. I just started bartending like almost a month. Been wanting this for so long. I even missed sour mix in a magarita tonight geesh!!! any advice?? Thanks all!

I should add that eveyone loves me there (customers and staff) and they even see me trying so hard.

Stick the cocktail recipes on the back of the bottles of the main liquor used.

I feel you. I've been a server and a bartender. I could never get to sleep after getting home... because I was always so hyped up. I would sometimes take an Advil PM... or honestly most of the time I used to smoke a big ol' blunt to relax...lol (don't do that anymore though).

The not eating thing--- that always used to happen to me cause I would eat a late lunch start work at 5 PM and work till 3AM by like 9PM I was starving... so I got in the habit of drinking protein shakes or meal replacement shakes/bars... it's easy to sip on them or stuff it in your mouth when no one is looking and it would at least keep me going. Figure out what works for you... but try not to starve yourself cause that just puts extra stress on your body and affects your performance.

This may sound strange, but the most important thing is that you really be where you are. When I trained I explained that the single most important attribute in a bartender is self-posession. There is nothing EVER so pressing that you can't stop for a moment, take a breath, compose yourself, and see what's around you. There are any number of hazards in bartending that learning this technique will allow you to sidestep. Who's dry, who's armed, who's leaning, who's holding a drink they didn't order, who gets buzzed once a year or every day, who the undercover is, who your servers are hitting on, who's hitting on you (quick note, don't get your meat where you get your bread), all this and more. But first, stop. Breathe. See.

I bartended to put myself through college - brings back memories.

After work, a few of us went to an all-night bowling alley; sometimes a meal at diner, go home and take a hot shower to unwind in front of the tube.

Just relax and enjoy the atmosphere and tips, just be careful not to start having drinks to relax... that's dangerous.

Just stick with it. Eventually you will find a rhythm that is comfortable for you and you will be able to breeze through the night with no problems.

Make some quiet time for yourself after you get home. Time to calm down and relax after your shift.

Relaxation techniques work well for me when I am tending bar. You can only make one drink at a time so just breathe young buck and slow your roll.

Just breathe deep, make sure to take your breaks to sit and eat, and you'll probably feel less rushed the longer you are working there.
