your self-esteem? what techniques, methods, skills do you use (please be specific)? is it really possible to improve years of bad habits (looking down) and beliefs (i'm no good) with self-esteem work?

You already started by accepting the fact you need to improve yourself. Get a new look you are comfy with, study and learn to express yourself verbally. Learn basic etiquette and if you need to - take up lessons on how to be a better person. There are schools like John Robert Powers that help improve personality problems.
