Just my opinion...but I think if Patton had invaded Iraq we wouldn't have near the mess we have now.

If Patton had invaded Iraq, Iraq wouldn't exist as a country anymore. It would be an empty desert that has the distinctive odor of thousands of balls that just got stomped.

Retired General Tommy Franks is "no Norman Schwarzkopf" - his flamboyant predecessor who propelled the US to victory in the 1991 Gulf War and whose media briefings became famous.

Although he holds degrees in Business and Public Administration, General Franks is a "muddy boots soldier" who prefers the company of his fellow officers and men to talk-show hosts.

In modern warfare, a general not only has to fight, but talk a good fight as well. Gone are the days when a commander could disappear onto the field of battle and not re-emerge until he had won.

The Afghanistan and Iraq campaign was unlike any other. It was part orthodox military operation, part criminal investigation, part humanitarian relief, part counter-terrorist operations.

It needed a commander who was capable of thinking in an extremely unconventional manner with highly attuned political antenna. General Franks was quietly brilliant in Afghanistan and Iraq; Stormin' Norman would have been 'closer' to Patton-styled bulldozing - but any of these 3 military mind would still be 'bogged down' in Iraq - it's got little to do with their differing leadership style or modus operandi. It's the fear of high US casualties and increasing anti-war opposition at home. American leadership have learned plenty from Vietnam.

Patton would be fired quickly for insubordination. He's too unpredictable and would be butting heads with Donald Rumsfeld and Bush.
It wouldn't make a difference since the President makes the policy.

60 years ago Iraq wouldn't have been a problem, except that whole area was under the control of the British.
