Add to what Jason has posted:

Many people thought that by burning joss-paper and giving offerings to the Deities ir ghosts are for them to eat and enjoyed, but actually are NOT.

All these are just form of respect and also transforming them into the necessary positive energies to the Deities and Spirits.

These practises dont exist in Taoism only, but all sort of Religios around the World.

I personally think the philosophy of Tao is more interesting than the religion of Tao.
As a positivism, I think Tao is a religion that closely related to the philosophy of science, if I compare to other religion.
Tao people do study, explore, and learn tjhe nature. (I mean they accept evolution and believe scientific medicine is the way to cure people, they don't against abortion and such...)

If you study "Tao De Chin", it is quite profound and abysmal.
But I am not keen to the ritual of Tao.

Here is some qns for you.
1. If burning of hell money goes to the dead which it is offered too then who would receive the rubbish that is incinerated?

2. If you need to burn things for the dead to receive, how come you still offer real oranges, flowers, tea and other food for them to eat? Should that be burnt too?
