Is Sexual Orientation a Choice?

No, human beings can not choose to be either gay or straight. Sexual orientation emerges for most people in early adolescence without any prior sexual experience. Although we can choose whether to act on our feelings, psychologists do not consider sexual orientation to be a conscious choice that can be voluntarily changed.

Can Therapy Change Sexual Orientation?

No. Even though most homosexuals live successful, happy lives, some homosexual or bisexual people may seek to change their sexual orientation through therapy, sometimes pressured by the influence of family members or religious groups to try and do so. The reality is that homosexuality is not an illness. It does not require treatment and is not changeable.

However, not all gay, lesbian, and bisexual people who seek assistance from a mental health professional want to change their sexual orientation. Gay, lesbian, and bisexual people may seek psychological help with the coming out process or for strategies to deal with prejudice, but most go into therapy for the same reasons and life issues that bring straight people to mental health professionals.

What About So-Called "Conversion Therapies"?

Some therapists who undertake so-called conversion therapy report that they have been able to change their clients' sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual. Close scrutiny of these reports however show several factors that cast doubt on their claims. For example, many of the claims come from organizations with an ideological perspective which condemns homosexuality. Furthermore, their claims are poorly documented. For example, treatment outcome is not followed and reported overtime as would be the standard to test the validity of any mental health intervention.

The American Psychological Association is concerned about such therapies and their potential harm to patients. In 1997, the Association's Council of Representatives passed a resolution reaffirming psychology's opposition to homophobia in treatment and spelling out a client's right to unbiased treatment and self-determination. Any person who enters into therapy to deal with issues of sexual orientation has a right to expect that such therapy would take place in a professionally neutral environment absent of any social bias.

I've been dealing with this since I just started going to church and I feel like I need to gouge out my eyes, it is so very hard. It's hard for everyone when it comes to lust not just homosexuals. The only thing to remember is that sin comes from the devil and you should just keep asking for forgiveness everytime you sin even though He(Jesus) already paid the price in full. Knowing He has so much power helps me sometimes and reading the Bible. I hope this helps you, God bless.

I am going to assume you really want to know and are not spouting off a question to get some "christians" annoyed. I want to give a little background info to tell you I do know what I am talking about, before I became a christian at the age of 34, I was addicted to sex, I was molested at a young age and I do not recall any part of my life where I was not sexually active since, that was when I was around 5 so that was a lot of years. I had over 100 differant sex partners by the time I was 18 years old. I can tell you that I know for sure that people chose their "orientation" because I was tempted and did have sex with girls too when I was preteen and young teen13/14. As I got older because I felt it was wrong (not because I was told it was wrong) because God gave us a conscience to know good from evil I started to avoid girls and only hang out with guys mostly, all my friends were guys. So anyway I get married and me and my husband bring porn into the bedroom and I begin to lust after women and start to want to experiment with having multiple partners etc...because of what I had opened myself up to all this started to happen, but yet we did not act on it because in my heart I KNEW it was wrong, not that I cared about what other people thought, but I felt HORRIBLE. Now to tell you how I overcame and how you can too...I will post for you a scripture and then pick it apart and see what it is saying..

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

The bible clearly tells us the battle we are having is a spiritual battle and the battle ground is in our minds, I use to wonder where I got some of the thoughts that just seemed to fall into my head.. I was repulsed by some of the thoughts and temptations I had in the past and before I became a Christian I thought I was crazy. so break down the scripture to overcome the "lust" or temptations..first have the BELT OF TRUTH in place..know the truth of Gods word and keep his word in your heart..when our belts are on it holds up our pants, so with Gods word in place it will hold us up..it make us accountable...Next the breastplate of righteousness...Jesus is our righteousness and the breastplate GUARDS YOUR HEART..guard your heart by having Jesus spirit there ( I am not addressing the shoes for readiness, I don't see how it applies here) take up the SHIELD OF FAITH or faith guards us from the fiery darts of the evil one (All those thoughts that just fall into your head, those are the fiery darts) And the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT which is the word of God ... Notice when Jesus was being tempted he always responded by saying "it is written" he knew and used the word of God to fight the battle, we need to do the same thing. I also want to point out one more thing it is not found in this scripture but it goes like this Do not conform any longer to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...I don't know where you are in life and all the things that have happend in your life but we need to renew our mind from all the lies and garbage we have been subjected to in the course of years we have been in this dark world and still live here. We will always be fighting the battle until the Lord brings us home but one thing for sure the victory is ours...because JESUS WON ON THE CROSS
