you have to do your homework, visit multiple booking sites, airlines sites, forums and see how much you should pay approximately, then when you see that price -> buy .. good starting point below

The best site for cheap airline tickets are:
Orbitz
http://www.orbitz.com/
Expedia
http://www.expedia.com
Travelocity
http://www.travelocity.com
Cheap Tickets.com
http://www.cheaptickets.com/

One of the best flights for cheap tickets (in my opinion) is Kayak.com. It's a simple site with a simple layout. There are hundreds of "cheap ticket" sites out there, and Kayak searches many of them. It also search's every airline website too. Once it's finished loading up all the websites, it will display the cheapeast prices found, at the top of the list, with the highest at the bottom. It often comes up with 15+ pages of prices from all the different websites, but you want to stick to pages 1 - 4 for the cheapest prices.

Kayak does not book the flights for you. They simply direct you to the website were the cheapest result came from.

The only thing is, when you book with these "cheap fare" sites like Travelocity, Orbitz, and Expedia, once you book . . . that's it, you've paid and cannot get any refunds period.
Some of the sites offer 'site insurance' but there tricky and put it in small letters so it's hard to see while booking.
If you do get the site insurance/ travel insurance, for example Expedia Travel insurance, they will cover for some things, but not everything. Sometimes, but rarely, at the airline check in counter they will have no result of your purchase ticket, because the cheap ticket site you booked through didn't proccess it correctly and since you booked through a "third party" they will not refund you, as technically you didn't book it, the website did for you, and your booking through that website, not the airlines own. So be careful and always review what you have purchased and write down all conf. numbers, and print the ticket information, at least 2 copies to be safe.

For cheap fare airlines I reccomend:
JetBlue Airways
http://www.jetblue.com/
Air Tran Airways
http://www.airtran.com/Home.aspx
Southwest Airlines
http://www.southwest.com/

In Canada:
Jazz Airlines
http://www.flyjazz.ca/english/index.asp
Harmony Airways
http://www.harmonyairways.com/
WestJet Airways
http://c1dsp.westjet.com/guest/home.shtml?language=EN
Zoom Airlines
http://www.flyzoom.com/

You can get tickets for as low as $69 to some locations with the above listed airlines.Flying with major airlines like American, Delta, United, and any of the "alliance" airlines, is expensive because they usually offer more than the standard low fare airlines.

- Hope this helps :-)

You make friends in hight places like the flight attendants and security staff in airports. Or you wait untill someone cancels and they need to fill the plane. I managed to fly dirt cheep once but I waited for two days in the airport. It depends how badly you want it and how good you bs your way around problems. Good Luck !
