Your friend is twisting Scripture to accomodate his lustful desires. This is the passage that he is reading into.

Genesis 38:8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother." 9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. So whenever he went in to his brother's wife he would waste the semen on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother. 10 And what he did was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and he put him to death also.

God didn't condemn the man for masturbation which is not mentioned once in the Bible. The man wasn't masturbating for one thing. He was with a woman and not by himself. His sin was in failing to fulfill his God ordained duty to carry on the line of his deceased brother because he didn't want to have to share the inheritance from his parents. Also the woman he was with wasn't a whore. It was a legitimate practice in this Old Testament setting.

Here's a link that you can share with your friend although it sounds like he just wants to continue on in his sins so I don't know how much good it will do you or him. You can always pray that the Holy Spirit will bring conviction on him because even if he isn't born again that's how God brings people into his family and how he corrects his children who stray from the path of his will for their life.

Biblegateway.com finds nothing at all in any English version resembling this.

And those quoting Genesis 38:8 and 38:10 all leave out Genesis 38:9: But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother.

Ergo, "38:10 What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also." was not refering to spilling his seed per se, but to spilling his seed TO SPITE HIS BROTHER. Just READ THE BOOK!!!!!!!

No such bible verse

Genesis 38:9
And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

38:10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

This is the basis of many Christian doctrines, including the condemnation of both masturbation and birth control.

check out this link: http://www.bartleby.com/61/48/O0074800.html and read the story surrounding it. He's partially right, but it was in Onan's specific case.

There is a verse that says that, but he's just twisting it around to suit his purposes.
