My cat knows her name also i call her by a bunch of different nicknames all of which she responds to. I talk to my cat all the time even though i do feel silly at times but my cat loves it. If I call her she gets this silly look on her face and comes running happily towards me. I think i make my cat happy whenever i talk to her because she will meow for me. She is usually a mute cat and i am the only person that she will actually "talk" back to. I make my cat feel special and at the same time she makes me feel special.

Yes, all my cats know their names and I talk to them all the time. My cat Leo meows at me all the time when I talk to him. Most of my other cats usually look at me and sometimes they meow back as well. I lost a cat last month and he was a talker. He was always meowing and we would talk to him all the time. It was like he was answering us in his own little language. We miss him a lot.

Of course they do. With each of my cats, I would/do talk to them in a different voice. Maybe I should have been a cartoon character or a ventriloquist, who knows? But I'm really good at doing voices. So each cat I had/have, and believe me, I took in a lot of strays, I would talk to them in a voice according to what they looked like to me; what I thought their personalities would be, and sound like, if they were human and could talk to me. It was, and still is, hysterical when people come to the house and see it in action. They all individually answer when I imitate their voice (at least the voice I thought/think they would have). Do you suppose they laughed/laugh amongst themselves and said, "I think this is what she would meow like if she were a cat and not a mere human?"

Of course they know their names. They are very intelligent, and can outfox most humans pretty quickly. They train us, and don't let us forget it. Mine will usually come when I call them, and will look out for each other. They generally have the run of the house, except my bedroom as I have allergies and have to have that as a hair-free zone. One night we got woken up to three of them outside the door meowing and generally carrying on like crazy. When we got up to investigate, the fourth one had gotten trapped in the bathroom and her buddies were letting us know that something was wrong and they couldn't find her. They kept walking to where some of her favorite catnap spots were and then staring at us. It was really amazing. My dog, a cutie pie Pom even knows all of the kitties by name and I'll have her look for them one by one and she'll run back at forth until she "finds" them all. Then she'll sit up on her hind legs and yip until I tell her she did a good job. It's quite amazing and entertaining. The longer your cat is with you, the more he will learn. Enjoy every minute, it's so much fun!

When I took my kitty, at about 5 months, he already knew his name - and although I don't like it all, I decided it will be better if I don't change it, considering. Yes, he defintiely knows what his name is; I have seen cats who also know what the name of another pet in the household is (and starts looking for that other pet on the mention of the name). They know their names, I believe, the same way we do - they associate it with the fact that somebody pays attention to them. Or something like that...
I talk to my cat all the time, he sometimes answers; when I am going to work in the morning and I tell him I will be back for lunch break, and I don't return, he is likely to have done something I don't like (not a big mess, just a sign - "You promised, but you didn't come back!!!")... and other things like that. He rarely comments on what I tell him, but he sometimes does, and I love him soo much! :))
Greetings, and enjoy your companion!

I think my cat does know her name, but that doesn't mean she comes to me when I call her! I think she knows a few words, too. When I ask her, "Wanna treat?" she runs into the kitchen, and to the corner where her treats are kept. And sometimes when I say, "Where's mousie?" (her toy) she brings it to me, but this is probably coincidence. She makes a weird chattering noise when birds are outside the window, as if she's trying to talk to them. And when my son calls, I put the phone by her ear and she meows to him. She's actually his cat, but he's away at Army Combat Engineer School.

Some cats know their names, some don't.
You're cat may think that he has 2 names -- his given name and "Goodbye".
Siamese cats meow a lot. If there's a chance that your cat has any Siamese in him, then he may not know his name, he may just be meowing.
I "taught" my cats their names. I used positive reinforcement -- in other words, tasty snacks!

They absolutely do!! Cats are extremely intelligent. I had a cat that knew her name no matter who said it, and she talked to us too! If she ever was hungry or wanted anything we would know, no doubt. One time my brother accidentally stepped on her tail. She got SO angry at him that she looked right at him, hissed at him, and when he sat on the couch, she climbed up near his head, meowed in his ear and literally SLAPPED his face with her front paw!! It was the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life- if we had had a videocamera we could have won a lot of money!

Our cat knows when we speak its name that it means her. Of course, I talk to our cat all the time, and she listens. She will come when I call her (usually), she understands that "no" means to stop doing what she is doing. Cats are intelligent in a weird kind of way.

Absolutely. Trust use to have cats and they use to tell me when their food is cooked. With a "Meow" of course!! I think they remeber the sound, the frequency, the Decibles etc.(the characteristics of sound)
