Yawning is dog language for anxiety or excitement. It is a 'calming signal'.

If something is going on like loud music or people around, the dog might yawn because it is a calming signal with domestic dogs -- a subtle sign to ask what ever it is talking to, to please calm down.

If a nervous dog approaches a dog that is more dominant, the dominant one or the nervous one, or both together might give yawns. The dominant one might wag it's tail and do a play bow (butt in the air) then lay down close, but not pointing his head directly at the nervous one. These are language signs that you can read while you watch dogs at a dog park.

Watching wild wolves or wolves on a reserve can educate this way too.

Another kind of yawn... If you are in a car and going to your favorite dog park, the dog might yawn when you get into the parking lot and are trying to park. This is because he's so excited, and might even shake his head too and yawn loudly with emphasis "HURRY UP ALREADY" he is saying.

You can read more about 'calming signals' on different canine behavior and training web sites.

Each situation is a little different sometimes, but yawning by dogs is not about boredom or being tired. It is a special language that animal lovers can come to appreciate when 'reading dog'.

Yawning -- dogs yawn to reduce their own stress and attempt to calm others. Tip: when a dog displays a fear of some common, nonthreatening stimulus (such as the approach of another dog or someone in a hat), the family members might try looking away and yawning at the onset of the stimulus.

They also yawn when they are confused.

if your dog has been spayed or neutered. she/he might yawn because for one, i do not believe in spaying or neutering animals. I used to work at Petco, and i see clearly the difference between cats and dogs that has been spayed or neutered. They become lethargic, their breath stink, they smell bad in general, and they lack the vitality they once had. Think about it, if someone cut our a functioning organ from your body without you knowing, what would happy? you would become ill, right? an intelligent animal like you? of course. Any behavior animals have are in direct correlation with human actions. They do not act a certain way "because they are animals" believe it or not, they have logic/reasoning/before and after thoughts just like any living things, even things as small as bees knows to sting you when its mad. if you hurt them physically, they will become "crazy" psychologically. I don't call them "dog behavior" I call them "puppy who are unwillingly made permanently ill for the rest of their life, thus became crazy/insane behavior"
