I'm gonna be right next to the thing for a while so i want a light that produces a low amount of heat, ideas?

Conventional incandescent light bulbs also emit a good bit of ultraviolet light, but they do not convert any of it to visible light. Consequently, a lot of the energy used to power an incandescent lamp is wasted. A fluorescent lamp puts this invisible light to work, and so is more efficient. Incandescent lamps also lose more energy through heat emission than do fluorescent lamps. Overall, a typical fluorescent lamp is four to six times more efficient than an incandescent lamp. People generally use incandescent lights in the home, however, since they emit a "warmer" light -- a light with more red and less blue.

So yes.

They're much cooler and more energy efficient than incandescent lights, but if you put your hand on one it will still feel warm. Fluorescent lamps are ultraviolet gas discharge tubes with a mix of phosphors on the inside of the tube. The UV light makes the phosphor mix give off red, green and blue light, which combine to give white. This is where most of the heat is produced. The most efficient and coolest lamps of all are white LEDs. They're just coming on the market and nearly 100% of the electric power is converted into light. They feel cool when you touch them.

Not Fluorescent. As technology advancement, the development of Bright LED over the small 1" x 1" Surface PCB board is just equivalent to 16W Fluoro lamp. Power Less with Bright LED and low amount of Heat Loss. Lifetime increases greatly.

No. The coolest light source would be LED's (light emitting diodes). They produce a lot of light, and very little heat.

Technically, the most efficient light source (ever) is a laser diode. But those aren't very practical for regular lighting.

You can buy LED lightbulbs at these sites, amongst others:

http://www.theledlight.com/120-VAC-LEDbulbs.html
http://www.ccrane.com/lights/led-light-bulbs/index.aspx
http://www.ledtronics.com/markets/25mm_med_index.htm

They're expensive, but, if heat is really that important, they're the best you can get for your money. They're also the most efficient useable light source available (that is: you'll spend much less on your electric bill using these), and they won't "burn out" for decades.

I think the most practical answer would be yes. As previously stated, LED lights are cooler and more efficient, but the cost is significantly higher.

Yes, but the ballast does give off some heat.

yeah flourescent is the bes they get hot but nothing like other kinds and they will save you money on energy cost.

Absolutely and they use less electric than the others.
