My brother is bipolar and my father was bipolar. My father was fine. He took large doses of lithium to remain stable. When he was diagnosed, Lithium was one of the only available stabilizers and Thorozine was used as a sedative. However, he was an alcoholic. Alcohol and drugs work against your meds. And once again, the right amount and frequency of your meds will be key to maintaining yourself, it may take a while to find the right combination for you. Don't be ashamed, many many people are bipolar, EVERYONE has mood swings to some extent, when they become uncontrollable and possibly dangerous, it is diagnosed as bipolar (or manic-depressant).

I have a lot of experience with the disease, I can assure you it is treatable, and you can have a normal life as long as you don't convince yourself that the medicine is worse than the symptoms.

My bro is bi-polar and addicted to crack cocaine and an alcoholic. He believes that his medicine is poison. He is currently in an uncertified halfway house because the family couldn't handle his manic state. When he is on his meds he is mostly a normal guy.

You need to get into a support group.

Drop me a line or go to my 360 page at http://360.yahoo.com/avidcyclist4 . I use three medications to control my bipolar disorder, they are: Wellbutrin, Zoloft and Geodon. Zoloft and Wellbutrin are the antidepressants and Geodon is an antypsychotic that is used as a mood stabilizer to help me control manic episodes, but for me it pretty much eliminates the manic modes. I find that Wellbutrin in combination with Zoloft work very well for me. I also have come to terms with the fact that maintanance medication will be needed for the rest of my life and I'm ok with that. I have no real side effects so that helps too. I do have a rather reduced capacity for emotion, as I find it next to impossible to cry, but for me that is nessesary given my penchiant for being emotionally unstable. Anyway, if you'd like to talk more drop me a note or add me to yahoo messenger: avidcyclist4.

No but I know someone who is. You are not crazy. This is a chemical imbalance. Do you have time to do daily hard exercises (the kind which will bring up the sweat)? The adrenalin seems to help some people control the moods. Sally Fields, the actress, and many other well known and famous people in the past live (or have lived) with that medical condition.

Personally, I think everyone is. That's because the human psyche is such that it adapts to certain situations. The concept of a bipolar individual is basically that they have two sides of them. This is a basic reaction to your environment. I've never been diagnosed as bi-polar, but I'm sure that if I saw a psychiatrist, I'd also be ADD, hypertensive, bipolar, schizo, etc... according to which ever test I take.

Sorry I couldn't give you more information on how to medicate yourself, but I just think doctors are too quick to label individuals. Good luck.

I am bipolar. I take xanax, effexor, and lithium.
I can't even begin to tell you how wonderfully it changed my life. I suffered this for 30 years before I got the nerve to seek help.
I'm told that I'll most likely be on medication for the rest of my life and if it keeps me from suffering the hell I was going through, I'll not mind.
You can get my email from my 360.
Feel free to email me and I'll help you if I can.

no - but my sister and several friends are.
the secret to success is taking prescribed meds!
they all felt like they were not working or that they did not need them, however, the difference was between day and night when they did not!
on the other hand, it will not hurt to get a second opinion,
for the best medication, cause there can be difference as to what works best for you.
in any event, please do not stop medication, I have seen result!
