For some reason I get the feeling you have a hard time with dealing with life...hence the cutting.
Are you done with the psychologist? How did things go with that? Do you feel you have worked through your problems? Military life isn't for everyone. A lot of mind games are involved (starting with your recruiter!!!) and if you are having problems dealing with life I highly doubt that military life is going to be less stressful. If anything it will be much more. There is a theory behind it and that is they don't want you to fall apart out in the field or not be able to back up your buddy under the pressure of gun fire. War is hard and REALLY messes up the mind if you are not a strong person. Ask any one who went to NAM.
Boot Camp is really tough. Thats where it really starts. Thats where they seperate the men from the babies. You want direction? They will give you direction alright...and much more then you want or ask for.
How do you feel about getting up at 4 in the morning and hitting PT right a way? Yelling in your face, nose to nose? Face in the dirt? Endless push up's and endless runs with weighted pack's on your back? You have to be physically fit. You HAVE to pass the PT test or you don't make it?
You have to do some research on your own. You have to look deep into every branch of the military. You can't trust what a recruiter tells you OR any one in the militery (even a closse friend) because they all want points for a recruit.
As far as the Guard or Reserves (weekends)...when you join them as opposed to regular military (day to day)....you have to sign up for a longer period of time.
As for your past....you must pass the fittness test to get in and if you lie about anything...and they do find out that you lied....or if you start have problems related to your past (cutting) and you lied to get in you might be facing a court marshall...and that will follow you your whole life....
Please...DON'T junp into joining the militray looking for them to be the answers to your problems....you just may get MORE then you are looking for...
And lastly....if you DO decide that this IS what you want....maybe a letter from the psychologist that you went to, stating that all your issues are resolved....might just help you on your behalf.

look the military will find out about it Ive seen people make it all the way through basic training and get put out at the end over something the didn't tell. And don't let the recruiters lie to you there whole purpose is to get bodies in the door at any cost I had two mentally retarded guys in basic with me just as an example, off course they where sent home later. its very unlikely you will be excepted unless this is in a juvenile record which they cannot unlock. I'm sorry good luck in life stay positive

The chances of you having to actually go on the frontier of a peace keeping mission to the Middle East is probably very good. The Military might argue that the mere sight of this sadistic person will frighten all away and the mission will be a success.
Just joking.
Remember this:
Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Believe in yourself and your self confidence will eventually pay off. Don't say something is impossible, just because it is very difficult.
Success is entirely up to the person who desires it the most.
Good luck.

first of all the ones that stated they could reject you for this are correct, second if you truly want to serve, try the army, the marines are much tighter about who they will allow in. Get it in writing that you have worked through your issues. Make sure you can pass psychological testing. If you have your diploma and have no police record, you might have a chance. there is always the possibility of a waiver, but talk to a recruiter and be honest with paper work in hand.

It may not automatically disqualify you but you have to make it through the physical. They strip you down to your skivvies and a physician examines you. You will probably be asked to explain any scars you have.

This is a DQ. Anyone that discloses this info to the doctors will be disqualified for military service.

The army will take pretty much everyone. Try them first. Actually, even the marines. The recruiter was pretty set on getting me in (although i think he may have just wanted to uh, get with me...he suggested working out with him...yeah) and asked me the basic questions at first. He asked me if i had ever done drugs more than 3 times...I laughed and said many more times than that. he told me to re-answer the question, I didn't get it at first but he finally got the "right" answer out of me before moving onto the next. So just go try. You never know.

Say nothing, join the Army or Marines, and go cut up some terrorist instead of your arm.

I think you should be alright. I'll tell you this much though. If you don't have it under control, i wouldn't want you in my unit. Im in the army, in iraq, and wouldn't want someone who has an issue like that. I'm just saying, we are all about trust. If you have it under control, you're good. Otherwise, i'd say get it under control, than try. Good luck.

The military is very wary of people with prior psychological problems. Why don't you try the Reserves first or National Guard?
