Actually, the main ingredient in benedryl is diphenhydramine HCI, which is the ingredient in most over the counter sleep aids. So, taking Benedryl will give you the same effect as Simply Sleep. Sometimes I buy Benedryl because it is cheaper. Since the dosage for sleep is only 50 mg, your tolerance has built up. You will want to speak with a physician and see about getting on a prescribed sleep aid which will help you in the long run.

Sounds like you've become a bit addicted to it, and substance addiction of any kind is not healthy. Benadryl is an anti-histimine for allergies, and not a sleep aid. If you are unable to sleep at night you could switch to over the counter sleep aids like Tylenol Sleep-Aid or herbal remedies such as chamomile, or St. John’s Wort have been used for insomnia for many years. However, the effectiveness and safety of these products has not been documented. If these are not helpful you can go to a doctor for a perscription sleep aid such as Ambien. I suggest you see a doctor regardless, and have a physical to make certain that your Benedryl abuse has not caused any harm to your system, and then you can discuss sleeping disorders.

It's not healthy to have to rely on sedation to get to sleep every night. The sedation may help you get to sleep, but you're only taking away the symptoms of insomnia, and not treating the underlying problems that cause you to lose your sleep in the first place.

Ask yourself, what's making sleep so difficult for you? Stress, anxiety, underlying medical problems, life situations?

Taking sedation everyday can eventually result in dependence, as what seems to be the case for you now.

Try keeping a diary if you need an outlet for your stresses and frustrations. Take natural remedies, such as chamomile or lavender teas in place of benadryl to help you relax.

Before going to bed, refrain from exercise, heavy meals, work-related matters, stimulating TV programs or games. Instead, try putting on some quiet soothing music, read a non-work/ study related book or just chill with your favourite magazine. Drink a glass of warm milk before bed to help release the natural compounds in your body that aid sleep.

If you're facing immense psychological stress in your life, it's best to seek the counsel of a qualified psychologist or counsellor if you're unable to resolve them on your own.

good luck.

Absolutely. Two little red generic B-Drills and I snooze like a bear in the middle of winter on Nyquil. Hey, Nyquil!!
But it's only good in recommended doses---and not EVERY night. Jeez are you an insomniac?

"Some people abuse Benadryl as a hallucinogenic, saying they are "drillin" or "Benatrippin." But at doses high enough to cause hallucinations, the drug can also cause dangerous irregularities in heart rhythm."

That is a bit excessive. Don't you think? I have a very bad case of eczema on my hands and some nights I cannot sleep because my hands are so itchy. I take it to reduce the itchiness. If it helps me sleep so be it. I tried to find out what the long term effects are, but could not get any information. Well, that is all for now.

Please talk to your doctor about getting something to help you sleep that is for sleeping.. I take benadryl every night for allergies.. but I take it right before I go to bed so that I do not get sleepy feeling before... I take it to prevent hives.. I use to take 3 but now that I am under control I went down to 2 and sometimes just one to keep the allergies down... but I also use to take about 19 pills for asthma and allergies per day.. and now I just take the benadryl.. even with my medical stuff going on.. I still don't take 8 a day.. that is not good for you and will result in your system being to dried out.. and if you ever do need to take benadryl for something more serious it may lose its effectiveness... please talk to a doctor and get on the correct medication.. Good Luck :)

I do not know if it is healthy or not but it will make you sleepy. When you add up the milligrams that is 1,800 a night and perhaps that is a lots. Bendryl is mainly used allergies and body reactions of rashed caused by medications. Your use I do not know and try not to take advantage of your using the Bendryl.

No, it isn't. You've become dependent on them and have built up a tolerance to them which is why you're having to take more. I had a doctor once to prescribe it to me for sleep....for some dumb reason, he wouldn't prescribe a sleeping pill. Unless, it's doctor prescribed, it's not healthy.
